Editorial Review:

Amazon.com:
Sidney Poitier, in the beginning of his career, fires up the screen in the Civil-War-era bodice-ripper Band of Angels. The movie follows Amantha Starr (Yvonne De Carlo, later on The Munsters), a Southern belle whose fortunes fall when her father dies and family secrets come to light. She ends up under the protection of Hamish Bond (Clark Gable, close to the end of his long, remarkable career and still radiating an easy, charismatic masculinity), a plantation owner with secrets of his own. For much of the movie, slavery and the Civil War are just a colorful backdrop for a turgid romance--but just when you're ready to write the movie off, a scene unexpectedly digs into something more emotionally and politically complex. Poitier plays Bond's plantation foreman; every time he appears, Band of Angels turns into something fierce and promising. That promise never fully takes hold--Clark Gable is the movie's hero, not Poitier--but those crackling scenes (combined with a surprisingly sexual frankness in a 1957 feature) make Band of Angels more than just an embarrassing collection of manly swaggers, flashing eyes, and lugubrious spirituals. --Bret Fetzer

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Not as good, or as bad as the others say.
Band of Angels: the acting is passable, not fantastic, but fair enough for a B-Movie. The sets & costumes are wonderful to look at, which is the main reason I'm giving this one 3 stars. The story is entertaining to the end, so in that respect, this is worth seeing at least once. The one actress holding this movie back was Yvonne de Carlo. She's much too old for the part, and not at all believable as being "mulatto" or "quadroon." At times its painful watching her struggle with her lines. They should ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Band of Angels
Every time I've watched this movie I've enjoyed it and was very glad to be able to purchase it on DVD. The cast is great and the story line is also. I'd highly recommend it if you like Civil War era movies. :)

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Gable, Poitier, DeCarlo are outstanding!, Good Movie!
I am a Clark Gable fan and anytime I can get a movie on dvd I do so to add to my collection and to replace the vhs copy that I probably have already. I noticed this came available after Yvonne DeCarlo passed away. I wanted it of coarse and bought it.
It is wonderful! Made in 1957,3 years before Gable passed away. I won't go into any detail about the story line itself as the other reviewers do a good job of that. What I will say is that the color and quality of the film are fantastic compared to ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Another Of Clark Gables Best
Clark Gable In A Movie With The Early Begining Actors Sidney Poitier And Yvonne De Carlo In A Great Film About Race, Slavery And Love Conquering All. Based In Civil War Times Its A Classic That Should Be Seen By All

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Once again Clark Gable proves why he was the "King of Hollywood"
I first saw this movie twenty years ago and am thrilled that I see it on DVD. I fell in love with it right away. It's like Gone with the Wind with a happy ending. Movies like this is what made that era so wonderful.I much prefer these to the so call "realistic" movies of today. Like so many reviews before, it's much more that a bodice ripper. It teaching acceptance and forgiveness and doesn't pull any punches about slavery. Can't wait to get the DVD.
