It's like a twisted parody of the playful but far more serious space opera Farscape, though Lexx actually was produced first. Sad sack Stanley Tweedle (Brian Downey), a bumbling engineer with bad judgment and worse luck, is the pilot of the most powerful weapon in the galaxy thanks to a fluke accident. And his motley crew includes platinum-blond bombshell Zev Bellringer (Eva Habermann), whose DNA has been altered to contain that of a bloodthirsty cluster lizard; former assassin Kai (Michael McManus), a humorless, dead warrior kept animated for 2,000 years with artificial blood; and a decapitated, lovesick robot head named 790. The colorful "I Worship His Shadow," the satirical debut of the series, is an absurd fantasy about a rebellion (led by guest star Barry Bostwick, who gamely keeps a straight face while running around dressed in psychedelic Arabian Nights duds) against His Shadow, an immortal emperor who renders his subjects into raw protein for his invincible insectlike spaceship, the Lexx. Directed at a fast and furious pace and crammed with cool CGI effects that make up in ambition and wild design what they lack in polish, it's the show's finest hour and a half, a crazy adventure with a wacky sense of humor. It's obvious the show's producers lavished their care and attention on this pilot, for the balance of the miniseries never again reaches this level of invention and fun, though in moments it comes close. --Sean Axmaker Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - what have they done to this great series?I just loved the LEXX mini-series back in the days, so I got it on VHS as soon as it was released over here in Germany. Sadly, I had to find out those tapes contained versions of the movies that were quite heavily cut - something only too common for German releases. You might be surprised, but censorship on movies is really rigid in Germany. Even movies that are being released as NC-17 are very often cut-down versions. You really can't understand these movies without knowledge of German language. I really wonder who was that genius who decided it is not possible to hear original english speech and soundtrack. Only dubbed German is available. 20 eur to the trash - wham! Rating: - I thought this was as good as the other episodes in the first season. I agree with the other reviewers who mention a bit of confusion, but there are SF ideas a plenty, decent acting performances by all and a good balance of farcical situations and tight story telling. Although the suspense gets monotonous in places and there are small anachronisms, like the gears on the "burst of life" machine, the visual effects are mostly served up with care. Admittedly, developing a crush on Eva Habermann/Zev may have biased my review somewhat. Rating: - Weakest of the initial 4 "movies"I guess it's a matter of personal taste but I cared less for this full length LEXX(93 min) than any of the other 3. I WORSHIP HIS SHADOW and GIGA SHADOW could be viewed back to back for story continuity. EATING PATTERN comes across like an individual adventure, complete in itself and better for it. TALES...with Tim Curry seems to drag alot; the pacing is slow and the last third goes on forever with the coming supernova. Thankfully no other LEXX venture repeats this tedious ... Read More |
