Editorial Review:
Despite an intriguing premise and unsanitized content, crime just doesn't pay in Grand Theft Auto 2, an unrewarding gaming experience that attempts to simulate life as a thug. Players begin the game as a nobody and must gain respect from the gangs--mainly by performing "jobs" for them--and make a name for themselves, all the while avoiding getting busted (or worse) by the law.

Unfortunately, Grand Theft Auto 2 leaves far too much to the imagination. Viewed from a top-down perspective, the game's crude, two-dimensional graphics have an appalling throwback look about them, especially the character graphics, which are about the size of ants. Although gameplay is nonlinear, there's not a lot of variety involved, as you basically plod through a homogenous-looking city either on foot or in a vehicle, doing jobs that are progressively more tedious than challenging.

Unless you were a big fan of the first Grand Theft Auto, you'd best move right along, as there's nothing to see here. --Joe Hon

Pros:
  • Unsanitized content
  • Nonlinear gameplay
Cons:
  • Nowhere near as fun as you'd think it'd be
  • Crude 2-D graphics and uninspired sound

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Lots of freedom and highly entertaining
Grand Theft Auto 2 isn't a game for everybody. Some will be turned off by the amounts of violence and profanity but others, like myself, will love it and higly enjoy this game. There are several things to do in this game. You can steal cars, go on killing sprees, beat up people, wire cars with explosives and blow them up in heavily populated areas, and etc. Though the game can get somewhat repititive after a while and the graphics aren't the best and the controls can get a bit annoying at times but ... Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The best game next to GTA 3
Not owning PS2 and not wanting to play it on a computer a got GTA 2. The graphics are not great but the game makes up for it. I don't do the jobs there not as fun as blowing up cars with rocket launcers and other suff.In short great game but if you can't stand 2D graphics don't buy it.Other wise grab it fast.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - BEST GAME
Okay this game isn't as good as GTA 3 so why compare them. GTA 2 is still an awesome game, who doesn't like jackin cars, running from police, doing jobs for gangs...well some people don't like it but hey the rest of us do!! I don't care what people say GTA 2 will always be a great game no matter what. People say the graphics [stank] on the first GTA but did people still buy it?? Yes they did and if you like the first one pick this up for dreamcast, even after playing GTA 3 this game is still fun to ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A solid Dreamcast port, but the game shows its age.
Without a doubt, this is a very solid port. The graphics are much better, and the game still plays just as well. However, you will notice that it is dated. They have everything that made the PS One version great, but between the unresponsive Dreamcast controls and dated premise, you are better off waiting for GRAND THEFT AUTO 3.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Not as fun as you'd think...
While this game is fun for a while, it gets old very fast. This game is awful when compared to GTA 3. Do yourself a favor and use the $ you were going to use here and save up to buy a PS2 and buy GTA 3.
