Editorial Review:

Amazon.com:
Whether you connect to the Internet by using a modem or network card, McAfee Firewall offers a safe and secure personal firewall for your personal computer. Designed to let you monitor all incoming and outgoing network traffic with minimal fuss, this unobtrusive and simple-to-use utility can guarantee the safety of your system, especially now that more users are connecting to the Internet around the clock with DSL and cable modems.

McAfee Firewall sits between your system and the Internet. After installation, you can answer a wizard-guided "interview" that configures your firewall's behavior, along with the programs that will be permitted to work on the Web. Better yet, as individual applications attempt to access the network, the McAfee Firewall will prompt you without interrupting your normal work. After an ordinary session of computer use, this utility had discovered our browser, mail client, and FTP utility, and we weren't bothered with any more warning messages.

Behind the scenes, McAfee Firewall logs every attempt at network access, and saves the last 100 messages. By using its console-like utility, you can view network activity for every program that's running currently. This application gives you fine-grained control of protocols besides basic TCP/IP, with such acronyms as ARP, DCHP, ICMP, NetBIOS, RIP, and PPTP. Although you might not have heard of them, several of these protocols can be used in denial-of-service and other kinds of attacks.

A handy online help page documents the well-known types of security threats. (Chances are that you'll be surprised at the variety of ways there are to disrupt your system.) Don't worry, however; by checking the "Log Unknown Traffic" option in McAfee Firewall and regularly reviewing your log, you can detect any suspicious activity. In all, this low-cost utility can deliver peace of mind and solid security in an application that doesn't get in the way of your everyday Web browsing. --Rich Dragan

Amazon.com Product Description:
McAfee Firewall protects and defends your system, filtering both inbound and outbound communications between your computer and the outside world. Log all connections and connection attempts in the log file and review it later for security and auditing purposes. Protect both dialup or direct Internet connections, such as xDSL or cable modem. Filter all applications, system services, and protocols, including file and printer shares (i.e. NetBIOS); IP protocols (i.e. TCP/IP, UDP/IP); service-based protocols (i.e. FTP, Telnet); ARP/RARP; and DHCP. Additionally, it blocks IPX and NetBEUI on a per-device basis.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - DO NOT LET IT NEAR YOUR PC
Had I only read the reviews here before buying the "Office Suite". I updated my Windows 2000 Pro notebook, and it did not even install. Next, I thought it would install on my wife's new Windows XP notebook. There, it screwed up something in the networking software and prohibits us from using the modem to access the Internet. Nobody has been able to help us fix this, and the McAfee support is virtually non-existent.
This is a trap: How much time (=money) is it worth to you to deal with these ... Read More

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - The user reviews tell a story...
I just wish I had read the reviews before installing this product.

I installed this product when I realised that my DSL connection had to a number of trojan horses on my system and a slew of hacker attacks. I downloaded a 'free' 30-days trial version and installed this. I had a tough time having it installed properly to work with my DSL....and THEN the nightmares began.

A few days into the trial, annoying pop-up windows start appearing every so often asking if you'd want to ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Don't use software you don't understand
I have purchased and used McAfee Firewall without any problems at all. I can install it, I can uninstall it, it hasn't caused any problems with any of the programs either I or my husband run (including, but not limited to, an HP scanner, digital camera, printer, nomad jukebox, MS office, chemdraw, adobe photoshop, illustrator, acrobat, etc.). I can access our email information through Arizona State University's IMAP system, a notoriously difficult task, as well as the library and other services ... Read More

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Impossible to Uninstall!
I must agree with everyone else. I got this program with Mcafee Office 2000. It is impossible to Uninstall this program properly. There is no Uninstall_cpd file at all. If I remove it through Windows control panel, it screws up my network connection and I must reinstall Windows to get it back. I am about to go through this again for the last time. I am throwing the whole Office Suite in the trash!

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Buyer beware!
My wife bought this program because she wanted to protect our computer from Hacker attacks since we added a cable modem, which, along with its high-speed access, has an "always on" two-way link to the Internet that makes our computer vulnerable to such attacks. And on that front, it appears to have done its job. At least, we don't seem to have had any hacker attacks. But that's where the benefits end and the nightmares begin. You see, my wife also wanted to access her office Outlook e-mail from home, ... Read More
