The sturdy polycarbonate feeding chamber is a whopping 4-3/4 inches in diameter and 21 inches long, giving you a break between refills--and ensuring that squirrels can't hang down from the top to reach seed. Now, for the fun stuff: The birdfeeder features an encased motor and rechargeable (and replaceable) batteries. When you receive the feeder, simply charge the batteries overnight, hang the feeder from its looped bail wire, and prepare to be amazed (and entertained!). The motor is connected to the weight activated perch ring--birds will not set it off, even larger species like woodpeckers and cardinals. But the minute a squirrel hops onto the perch, the motor is triggered and the feeder begins spinning, taking the squirrel for a whirl before it loses its grip and is thrown (gently) from the perch.  Rating:  - Stripped gears in spinner = expensive waste of moneyThis feeder violates a basic law of engineering: simpler is better. Not long after installing this pricey toy in my backyard, the gears in the spinning mechanism gave out. My conclusion was that they were stripped, although I did not take it apart to confirm that diagnosis. All I know is that the spinning mechanism stopped working. When the battery died after two years of recharging.I couldn't mail the tower in for repair. If ther are only 2 screws in the battery case, it can be opened and batteries from the company website can be used to repair it. Key features of this product include: force of the spin, rechargeability, and ease of use. I would highly recommend this product to anyone. Previous versions of the product had issues with rechargeability. Those issues have been addressed with this newer version.
