But even into her mid-40s, Susann's combination of brains (an I.Q. of 140), beauty, and relentless self-promotion as an actress wasn't enough to achieve the celebrity status she craved. In this installment of A&E's popular Biography series, viewers learn of Susann's marriage, which survived 35 years despite her affairs with entertainers such as Eddie Cantor, the birth and institutionalization of an autistic son, and her struggle with drugs and alcohol. Absolutely determined to make a name for herself, Susann turned to writing. Beginning with the explosive Valley of the Dolls, Susann's works consistently shot to the top of the bestseller lists. Despite her commercial success, Susann has been shunned by the literary establishment; Truman Capote once dubbed her a "truck driver in drag." This episode features interviews with Susann's friends and clips from her television appearances. --Patty Stuart Description: Profile of the author of the scandalous bestseller "Valley of the Dolls". Looks at her sensational writing career plus new revelations about her private life, which included an autistic son, rumors about an affair with Ethel Merman, and her battle against cancer. ![]() Rating: - Fun look at the woman who broke through the apron barrierJackie is a legend and she had the hair and eye makeup to prove it. This video was fun. I only wish that the segments where Jackie appeared on talk shows (Merv, Mike, David) were longer. The attack by John Simon (?) on a David Frost interview was particularly fun. The video dodged her bisexuality, but did note that, even at her death, her devoted husband Irving shaved 3 years off her age to the press. Worth a look-see. |
