Unless mine has a defect (I don't think it does), there is a small flaw in the design of the circuit: If you hold UP on the D-pad, then rotate to UP-RIGHT or UP-LEFT, then release the RIGHT or LEFT component, the controller does not disengage the RIGHT or LEFT signal, but still registers a diagonal direction.
