Editorial Review:

Amazon.com Review:
Solus Pro mapping software for Palm OS handhelds is an affordable program for the PDA user on the go. This useful program from DeLorme offers comprehensive, communicative maps with all of the important information that you need to be well organized, while on the road or navigating through your own hometown.

Installing Solus Pro can be a bit tricky. In most cases of installing PDA software, the user expects the necessary components to install automatically after a sync operation. However, with this application, the user must enter the program, and manually add Solus Pro and any desired maps to the sync list.

After it has been installed, Solus Pro is an extremely valuable program. Ten different cities are available to download to your Palm OS device, accompanied by a Web site within which any user can find just about any place in the U.S. The user can access detailed vector maps and directions for quick searching; find streets, addresses, and address-book contacts; zoom to five levels; customize maps; and control the map features that are best to display for each user. One drawback is that this program probably shouldn't be used in a hurry, as it can be a bit slow--most likely, because of the high level of detail. Additionally, be careful of your free memory--each city can take up a significant amount of space.

If you're looking for a high-tech way to avoid having to ask for directions, Solus Pro offers one in this reliable, highly customizable navigation solution. --Kendra Hayden

Amazon.com Product Description:
DeLorme Solus Pro version 2.0 provides vector-map technology for locating individual addresses, contacts, or specific points of interest by city, state, or zip code--directly from your Palm OS handheld. You can upload street-level maps and route directions from the DeLorme Solus MapMaker Web site, and Street Atlas USA Road Warrior Edition, or get topographic map data from 3-D TopoQuads.

Also, you can connect your Palm handheld to the slim Earthmate GPS Receiver (cable required, available separately) and see your position updated in real time on a map that's displayed on your handheld computer. You can check your speed, time, heading, latitude/longitude, and elevation. Add marks to indicate specific places along your route, then synchronize these marks with your DeLorme software to see their location on detailed maps.

Other features include:
  • Quick search by address, place name, and point of interest with vector-based maps
  • Color maps on the Palm IIIc
  • Increased GPS capabilities
  • Easy navigation with drill-down tab menus
  • Ability to locate contacts from your address book and route among them by using the Earthmate GPS receiver

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Works decently with provided maps, poorly with downloaded
One of the things I was really looking forward to as a new Palm owner was having maps on my Palm. I found Solus Pro 2.0 at a nearby store and picked it up, thinking it was just the thing. Well, I'm a bit disappointed, and here's why:

First, reading a map on your Palm is a lot harder than reading a printed map, for some reason. Expect to be disoriented a lot.

The maps on the CD work pretty well (I was using the San Francisco map). I could find places to go reasonably well. ... Read More
