Brand: Symantec EAN: 0037648209458 Format: CD-ROM Item Dimensions: Label: Symantec Manufacturer: Symantec MPN: 07-00-03326 Platform: Windows NT, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows Me, Windows XP Publisher: Symantec Release Date: October 07, 2001 Studio: Symantec Editorial Review: Amazon.com Review: As long as a computer is connected to the Internet--by phone line, DSL, cable, or any other means--it is vulnerable to myriad attacks from the cyber-equivalent of late-night stalkers. Norton Personal Firewall 2002 provides a virtual barrier to these attacks without requiring a doctorate in computer architecture to install and run. Getting started is fairly simple and very straightforward. Wizards scan the system for Net-enabled programs and watch for unusual requests for access from within and outside your computer or network. After the first day or two, most users will forget that the software is running: notifications come fast and furious at first and then taper off to one or two per day at most (depending on what the user is doing on the Net). The most noticeable change in the system is a very slight delay in loading Web pages, and this only for bulky sites. As with any computer security product, Norton Personal Firewall has an upper limit of protection it can offer, at which point the user's knowledge and expertise are required to go further. For most home users--unlikely but still possible targets for assault--Norton Personal Firewall 2002 goes far enough and should keep data safe from all but the savviest hackers. --Rob Lightner Amazon.com Product Description: Norton Personal Firewall 2002 keeps hackers out and personal data in. Every minute your computer is online, it's vulnerable to intrusions and the theft of private information. Norton Personal Firewall defends against these threats at multiple levels, without interrupting your work. Right out of the box, it begins to secure your computer by concealing it from hackers. If anyone does attempt to probe your system, such as by scanning its ports, the AutoBlock feature automatically blocks their access. But Norton Personal Firewall doesn't stop with intrusion protection. It also prevents personal information from being retrieved without your knowledge, including through spyware and Trojan horse programs, by controlling the applications on your PC that can be accessed through the Internet. It automatically sets up firewall rules for the most popular online programs, so you get protection without a hassle. And, greatly simplifying firewall protection for your home network, it automates the process of locating all your computers so you can easily assign them to a trusted security zone. Whether you have a dialup, DSL, or cable connection, your PC needs the vital protection of Norton Personal Firewall 2002, your defense against hackers and privacy threats. Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - Using a remote destop connection with Norton firewallI find Norton Personal Firewall to be a very frustrating at times. However it does its job. I tried establishing a remote desktop connection and spent many frustrating attempts before getting it to work. If you're trying to set up a remote desktop connection you first have to open the proper port (3389) then create a general rule. The rule should allow inbound connections, from a specific computer (if static IP Address) for more security or it can be set from any computer, Communications: Any ... To my surprise Symantec offers NO free tech support. I surfed the "online support" (term used loosely) and found nothing referring to Remote Desktop... Finally I needed to get back to work and decided to pay the $29.95 for phone support only to get a message stating that they were too busy, please check the website for solutions. However it completly prevented me from viewing any websites under a 'secure server' Its caused me many wasted days with little access to the net. Money down the drain for this product, avoid! Rating: - Big disappointmentsNorton Firewall 2003 failed to install correctly on my Windows XP Pro machine with 512MB of memory! Every time I tried I got a blue screen with "Dumping physical memory", despite following the installation procedures to the letter. When I finally managed to install the program, it blocked a large number of websites, including symantec's own! And yes, I allowed pretty much everything on the setup screen. I finally gave up after three days, wrote the investment off and downloaded Black Ice. Installed correctly ... After installation, I visited numerous sites which had previously dumped loads of pop-up and pop-under ad windows and flash-based ads on my screen, but now -- POOF -- no more trash, with no discernable negative effects on web page loading. Plus ad banners are effectively eliminated--so all you get is the web page you want. After a week of intensive ... Read More |
