Editorial Review: Product Description: WHISTLER DE1793SE All Band Radar/Laser Detector with Digital Compass and Voice Recorder - Patented VG-2 cloaking technology Setting saver Vehicle battery saver and monitor 3 City modes Quiet Mode Stay Alert mode Selectable bands Tutorial mode Includes windshield mount bracket kit and 12V power cord Amazon.com Product Description: The Whistler 1793SE is a full-featured laser/radar detector outfitted with the latest technologies and the greatest conveniences, from advanced VG-2 and POP mode alerts and detection to digital voice memo recording and advanced safety alerts. With the change in time also comes change in technology, and radar gun manufacturers now include something called POP Mode, which makes it harder for radar detectors to detect them. POP Mode is a feature on some newer radar guns operating on K or Ka bands. In POP Mode, the gun transmits a brief burst of energy--less that 1/10 of a second--to acquire the vehicles's speed. A detector without POP Mode detection capability cannot respond to this brief transmission. With POP Mode detection, this detector has the power to report this new gun where other detectors cannot. In memo mode, you can record up to nine distinct message tracks for a total of 90 seconds, one 90 second message or any combination in between. The unit does not detect radar or laser signals during recording or while playing a memo. Memo mode is not intended to be used while you are driving. You should not use any device in a vehicle that may distract you from observing the road ahead. Memo mode automatically exits within 20 seconds if a button is not pressed. A compass provides points of direction, Real Voice alerts are given verbally through the detector so you do not have to take your eyes off the road to look at the display, and the unit's text display shows laser-radar information, VG-2 alerts, SWS messages, and detector status. A city button reduces the annoyance of false alerts typically encountered in urban driving areas. Pressing "quiet" before a signal is detected engages Auto Quiet Mode, which automatically reduces the audio level after the initial warning to a low audio level setting. Pressing the button during a radar/laser encounter silences audio alerts while allowing visual alerts to keep you informed. In communities where transmitters are located, the Safety Warning System displays over 60 text messages. When Safety Radar is detected, the audio alert is Geiger counter-like. Other features include high-visibility text display (provides distinct visual confirmation of signals detected, signal strength, and indicates engaged modes of operation), a bracket-release button (provides quick and easy release of the mounting bracket), a speaker (provides distinct audio warnings for X, K, Ka band radar, safety radar, laser and VG-2), a radar antenna (compact, high-efficiency antenna receives radar signals), a front laser antenna (high-gain optical lens provides increased sensitivity and field of view for leading-edge laser detection), a rear laser antenna (an integrated optical wave-guide provides superior detection of laser signals transmitted from behind). The unit's power jack provides connection for the power cord. mirrored sunscreens, etc. These obstructions have metal surfaces which can affect radar and laser signals and reduce critical warning time. (Regular tinted glass does not affect reception.) What's in the Box Radar detector and a user's manual. Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - Good detection, bad displayI purchased this detector as it seemed like a great deal for the price. It did actually perform fairly well, I never had a problem with it detecting, only issue is the display. As others have mentioned, the display is very hard to read during the day, especially in sunlight. Rating: - OK, especially for the money. This is one of the best budget buys in radar detection, but that's exactly what it is, a budget buy. Rating: - Display is hard to see in bright sunlightI have only had this product for a few days so I can't address many issues with the radar, but I can warn people about the display. I've had another whistler detector for around 7 years now but the speaker has given out and I can't find a new speaker to replace it. My previous detector used the same LED display as this one but was sunken inside the housing to shade the display somewhat. This one does not so I find it harder to read in bright sunlight (even on the brightest setting). A detector does ... Read More Rating: - Laser Radar Detector Whistler 1793A laser/radar detector is exactly what it says it is and not a cop detector. If the laser/radar is not turned on, this machine wouldn't pick it up. When it did detect properly and accurately for 5 times since I had it in 2 months, I had plenty of time to slow down every single time although I wasn't even speeding. The X band does pick up unwanted warnings from garage door openers and other signals. Since all 5 of my accurate dectections were K or Ka bands, I turned off the X-band completely, ...
