"Jen is a cheerleader and Jack's on the football team. I got sane and everyone else went crazy?" That's how Andie (Meredith Monroe) sums up the topsy-turvy beginning to the third season of Dawson's Creek, in which nothing seems to be as it should and the series takes a major turn. It's junior year at Capeside High, and Jack (Kerr Smith), the town's resident gay teen, is indeed on the football team, and Jen (Michelle Williams) finds herself the object of unexpected and unwelcome popularity among her fellow students, especially the freshman quarterback (Michael Pitt). Pacey (Joshua Jackson) finds that his relationship with Andie can't be restored, and Dawson (James Van Der Beek) and Joey (Katie Holmes), after the events of last year, both think it's for the best that they're no longer together--they just never think it at the same time. Significant events include the friends starting to date outside their circle, Dawson's giving up some of his aspirations, a crisis for the school's new principal, a college tour, and the openings of the Potter Bed & Breakfast and Leery's Fresh Fish. But the Dawson-Joey relationship is still the heart of the Creek, and it comes to a head in one of the series' most memorable episodes, "The Longest Day," and then the season finale. Even in its first season without series creator Kevin Williamson, Dawson's Creek still had plenty of punch.

On the DVDs, executive producer Paul Stupin does his usual commentary track for two episodes, and he's joined by Kerr Smith. They discuss the series itself, Smith's character, and Smith's subsequent career more than the events of the episodes. The second-season DVD set disappointed many fans by replacing a large portion of the music, and that trend continues in the third season, most surprisingly in the loss of Paula Cole's theme song. Instead, the opening credits feature Jann Arden's "Run Like Mad," which was used briefly in the international broadcast. Stupin explains the switch as an attempt to do something different and creative, but then admits there was also "a bit of an economic reality." Fortunately, the DVDs do have John Lennon's "Imagine" and Mary Beth Maziarz's "Daydream Believers"--songs that in dramatic context simply could not have been replaced--and it could be argued that a veteran viewer might skip the opening credits anyway. Still, for many fans, the music made Dawson's Creek what it was, and without all of it--especially the theme song--the DVDs seem like a compromise rather than a permanent keepsake. --David Horiuchi

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great Season
I know a lot of people diss on this season, but it was actually my favorite. Throughout the first two seasons I was totally rooting for Joey and Dawson and was torn up with the way that they broke up in the end of season 2. But I was pleasantly surprised at how much I loved watching Pacey fall in love with Joey and then how much chemistry they had together. I think this season also made Joey a more likeable character, because I think she was very easy to hate in the second season. Once I started ... Read More

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Why did they change the music???
This is by far the best season of Dawson's Creek, still the best, in my opinion, of all the 1990s teen shows. This is the one that reveals the love triangle which would be central to the series from this point forward and the emergence of Joshua Jackson, who is by far the most engaging character in this series.

However, why, why, why did they change the music for this DVD? Many of the episodes (including the fantastic LONGEST DAY) suffer greatly as a result. It's so disappointing, ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The Best Season of Dawson's Creek
Season 3 is the turning point for friends Dawson, Joey, and Pacey. Up until now, the show has been about Dawson and Joey's dysfunctional friendship/psuedo-romance.

However, 4 important events guide this season to probably the most emotionally exhilarating season finale of the series: 1) a mysterious, sexy stranger named Eve turns up in Capeside and takes an interest in Dawson and Andie, 2)After apologizing for breaking up with him and holding his part in her father's reincarcination against ... Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Best Season of Dawson's Creek because of Joey/Pacey
This is my favorite season of Dawson's Creek because of the development of the Joey/Pacey relationship. It's something you would never have predicted based on seasons 1 & 2, but somehow, it just seems to make perfect sense. The two characters have wonderful chemistry and we see tremendous growth in both of them this season. Get this season for the scenes between those 2 alone! I was never a huge fan of the love triangle aspect of the show, but this season I'll tolerate it because it's what makes the possibility ... Read More

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Wow, this was impressively sucky!
Don't get me wrong, I loved the first two seasons of DC but the third was complete CRAP! I bought it with the knowledge I had of the first two sesons and figured it'd be good. Boy was I wrong! It really dropped in to the ridiculous category in this season. I got the chance to see the rest of the seasons (4,5&6) and they were just as bad. It's a shame really...It was so good but it just jumped the shark in the 3 season
