Product Description:
Receives NOAA (NWR) broadcasts. First Alert Brand Emergency Alert Radios give you the life-saving advantage of an automatic warning before severe weather and other emergency conditions arise. Designed for use before, during and after emergencies, these radios meet the new CEA standard for Public Alert devices. Accurate Digital Tuning The unit uses accurate digital crystal controlled PLL (phase locked loop) tuning for all (7) NWR Channels. Analog radios which are tuned by turning a knob are prone to drift off of the set station over time and temperature changes. Digital Alert Decoding The (S.A.M.E Specific Area Message Encoding) Technology allows the radio to decode the digital broadcast information for all types of emergency, both civil (radiological, oil spills and chemical releases)natural (weather, earthquakes and volcano activities). These emergency alerts can be targeted to a specific area, with a granularity of 1/9th of a county. The text of the event is then shown on the LCD. NWR Alerting Receiver Constantly monitors one of the seven NOAA Weather Radio channels (162.400 162.550 MHz) for any emergency notifications i.e. civil emergency, AMBER Alert. There are more than 900+ NWR Stations covering 95% of US population. The system is used daily, and tested weekly. Alert Siren A two tone alert siren which sounds when an emergency alert is received. The siren can be set to mute, LOW ( 80 dBa ), or HIGH( 90 dBa ). Location Programming Up to 20 locations can be programme

Amazon.com Product Description:

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Lifesaver with a few annoying habits
We bought this product a couple of years ago because we live in tornado alley in Southern Indiana. It has saved us in the middle of the night more than once. We have experienced the "reception errors" that others complain of and have been woken up during the night a few times as a result, but I consider than only an "annoying habit" compared to the lifesaving features of this product. The ability to limit the notifications to your area and turn off the types of alerts you don't want to hear make ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Need two for large houses
Overall very pleased with this Alert Radio. It is simple to set up, very easy to read the display and the radio is very clear. Only concern is if the alarm is loud enough for a two story house. It's gone off twice, once when I was downstairs (where it's located) and it seemed effective. The second time it went off, I was upstairs and thought it was the television, until a commercial came on and the alarm kept going, then it dawned on me that it was the alarm. I would recommend that there be one ... Read More

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - One worked, one nearly caught on fire...
I purchased two of these, one for work which has been installed for over a year and works great (although since it is at work it could be going off daily with the alarms as others have mentioned), and one for home. I am just getting around to setting the unit up. I opened the unit and installed five alkaline batteries and started the setup process...it began smoking in my hands after only a few minutes. I disconnected the batteries and tried reinstalling the batteries but, now it won't operate. This ... Read More

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Radio reception error
Nice sound and good reception of weather channels, but radio constantly gives a weekly alarm with "radio reception error-listen to broadcast".
An emergency alert radio from a different manufacturer does not give false alarms. Poor design for automatic alerting feature defeats the purpose for having a radio with an alarm. Returning the unit for refund.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Huge waste of money
This radio is a huge waste of money and not worth purchasing. It functioned properly for a few weeks after I programmed it and then started throwing error messages on a regular basis. Then, it would cease to function about every two weeks - be completely dead. This necessitated disconnecting it from the power source, removing the back up batteries then replacing them and reconnecting it, and reprogramming ALL the functions and settings. It would then operate for another couple of weeks, and then stop again...the ... Read More
