No base station required.I wanted something portable so I could check the temperature and humidity throughout my house. This does the trick. Also my cooling system has a humidity dial but it doesn't tell you what humidity it is adding to your house. I believe you want around 40-45%. If humidity is too low, you can suffer from dry noses, skin, and throats, as well as cracked fingertips, and you're more likely to catch a cold.
