Thank goodness that's no longer the case. With multifunction machines like the SCX-4100 from Samsung, you can still get the high-quality results you have come to expect from separate peripherals, while saving both space and money. The SCX-4100 can print, copy, and scan, all in one easy-to-use machine. The monochrome laser printer has a 600 x 600 dpi resolution, with print times up to 15 ppm. (All reported speeds are maximums. Actual speeds will vary.) The color CIS scanner has a 4,800 x 4,800 dpi maximum enhanced scan resolution (600 dpi optical) and has a 24-bit color depth and a 256-level grayscale. The scanner supports the TWAIN standard and delivers scan times of about 27 seconds (line art). The copy feature allows you to reduce or enlarge your original anywhere from 50% to 200%, while a multi-copy feature lets you print up to 99 copies at a time. The SCX-4100 has a 250-sheet input capacity and 50-sheet output capacity, and accepts a wide variety of original media, including plain paper, transparencies, envelopes, labels, and stocks (card, thick, thin, bond, preprinted, and colored). Both USB and parallel ports are provided, and a 10,000-page maximum duty cycle is able to handle light-to-medium use environments.  Rating:  - Stay away from this printer.Worst printer I have ever used. From the very first day it started to give me paper jams. The scanning unit is OK. The print quality is not bad either. But this paper jam thing will run you nuts. Every time you are in a hurry and you need to print something fast, the paper gets stuck [seems like this printer has an evil artificial intelligence and it knows exactly when to piss you off]. Stupid printer. Waste of money. Rating:  - Excellent, Affordable B&W Laser PrinterI've owned this printer for almost two years. This printer is great for one thing: affordable, high-quality black and white *text* printing. The graphics are pretty lousy, but text looks great. It's perfect for a college student with a lot of notes and papers to print up. The machine takes 10 - 15 seconds to warm up, but pages print out very fast once it starts printing.
