Our title character (voiced by Mike Myers) is an agreeable enough ogre who wants to live his days in peace. When the diminutive Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow) evicts local fairy-tale creatures (including the now-famous Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, and the Gingerbread Man), they settle in the ogre's swamp and Shrek wants answers from Farquaad. A quest of sorts starts for Shrek and his new pal, a talking donkey (Eddie Murphy), where battles have to be won and a princess (Cameron Diaz) must be rescued from a dragon lair in a thrilling action sequence. The story is stronger than most animated fare, but it's the humor that makes Shrek a winner. The PG rating is stretched when Murphy and Myers hit their strides. The mild potty humor is fun enough for 10-year-olds but will never embarrass their parents. Shrek is never as warm and inspired as the Toy Story films, but the realistic computer animation and a rollicking soundtrack keep the entertainment in fine form.  Rating:  - wow!!Does this DVD have a lot of reviews or what? I never saw so many before at least not on Amazon. The movie was pretty good I guess but the second one was better. Did you know that there will be a 4th one in 2010? There will also also be a 5th and final one in 2013. Rating:  - A masterful tale.Shrek is a very clever movie, shrek two is even more clever. Too bad the film makers are running out of ideas by part three. Oh well, at least we have part one which will always be a classic. Awesome animation, awesome story, awesome voice acting. The movie makes fun of all the old fairy tales and I loved it. These are right up there with the Pixar movies. And the only singing is when their making fun of the old Disney songs. Too funny. Shrek won the whole familyThe original Shrek was a CG classic or masterpiece. It's truly a work of art in the computer graphics field. The detail in the CGI was AMAZING for its time and it still manages to impress me today. Other animated films like "Finding Nemo" and "Monsters Inc" compare to the beautiful composure, however Shrek is dominantly more humourous. The movie just has the word clever written all over it.
