 Rating:  - very smart designI wasn't sure at first if this mouse pad will do a good job with an optical mouse. But it has a hard surface on the upper end and the gel thing at the lower end where your wrist would lie. It has a very smart design. Rating:  - Depends on the size of the mouseIf you have a tiny mouse, this mousepad is incredibly comfortable and great to use. I have one at work with a small mouse and it has greatly reduced my wrist pain while mousing. However, if you have a large mouse, it's not such a good mousepad because the surface is contoured which causes the mouse to "wobble" when you try to click, making it very frustrating.
