Mame and La Cage aux Folles was filmed live at the Hollywood Bowl! System Requirements:Running Time 113 Mins.Format: DVD AUDIO Genre: MUSIC DVD/CONCERTS Rating: NR UPC: 014381319125 Manufacturer No: ID3191WLDVD Amazon.com: This 1993 tribute to Jerry Herman collects numbers from the songwriter's Broadway shows, performed by a wide variety of stars, many with strong ties to Herman. You've got Carol Channing, of course (the original and forever Dolly), Leslie Uggams (Jerry's Girls), George Hearn (La Cage aux Folles), Bea Arthur (with her trademark "Man in the Moon" from Mame), Lee Roy Reams and Karen Morrow (An Evening with Jerry Herman), Florence Lacey (The Grand Tour), Lorna Luft (Judy Garland's daughter), Davis Gaines, Michael Feinstein, and Rita Moreno, all backed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic under the baton of Don Pippin (Herman's longtime musical director) before a live audience at the Hollywood Bowl. Pippin leads the orchestra in instrumental medleys of waltzes and marches, Liza Minnelli, Paul and Linda McCartney, and Angela Lansbury offered prerecorded greetings, and humorous moments are provided by Luft's grouchy "Put It Back On" response to the dance team's "Take It All Off" (the producers make it up to her later by giving her Mack & Mabel's great ballad "Time Heals Everything"). There's also Reams's impressions of Channing, Pearl Bailey, and Louis Armstrong performing "Hello, Dolly"; and Arthur, who explains that Mame was not named after her character simply because nothing would rhyme with "Vera"--though "Sondheim could have done it." The guest of honor laughs right along with the crowd, and then takes the stage himself for the finale--for Jerry Herman fans, this concert is the best of times indeed. --David Horiuchi Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - Good for fansJerry Herman has become a legend by his own merits this special is filled with the best of his music, and with appearences of some of the stars that have acted in them. Is a lovely show but it doesn't have enough chorus to fullfilled the big Herman numbers. I wait for more stars but there were few. Good for Hermans an Broadway fans Rating: - A Jewel of a Concert! What a unique and wonderful evening this was at the Hollywood Bowl! For those of us who were not lucky enough to be there in person, this DVD provides the perfect next-best-thing. What a marvelous chance to hear this music - some well-known and some not-so-well-known - sung by such a superb cast. The incomparable voice of Davis Gaines is a standout, caressing "Song on the Sand" with such tenderness and power, he turns it into both an anthem and a lullaby. Rating: - Superb. Glad it's finally on DVDI bought this for myself but will have to order 3 more for friends of mine, they love it so much. I am so glad the concert is now available on DVD and hope other concerts will follow! Rating: - One Fantastic Concert! This has to be the best concert I have ever seen. Two hours of great performers (too bad Angela Lansbury could not be there) singing the music of Jerry Herman (Mame, La Cage, Hello Dolly, Dear World, The Grand Tour, Milk and Honey, Mack and Mabel, and for tv Mrs. Santa Clause). We get a full plate of great stars including Bea Arthur, Carol Channing, Michael Feinstein, and many more. The sound on this program is superb, great stereo separation. The filming was first rate. The performances ... Read More Rating: - It Only Takes A MomentIt only takes a moment to fall in love everlastingly with the immortal music of Jerry Herman. This DVD is a sublime treatment of some of the best of the best. It is impossible to listen to this music and not love it. The cliche is true: You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll experience the full range of human emotions. The entire show is one big highlight, but for me, some transcendant standouts include Michael Feinstein's perfect rendition of the classic "I Won't Send Roses" from Mack and Mabel, ... Read More |
