I didn't have to do it and it's easy to register online. Here's what happens: You just go to www.apple.com/support/register. Then you put in the date you bought the computer, the serial number (easy to find by going under the Apple menu of your computer to About This Mac, then More Info) and then you input the registration code that comes on a piece of paper in the Protection Plan box.
