These are extremely effective at canceling out low frequency noise. I tried them on a loud diesel engine and while I still heard every bit of the higher frequency noise from the engine, but the low frequency noise disappeared. It sometimes spontaneously starts to hum (as if it's stuck in a feedback loop), and you have to turn noise canceling off and back on again to get rid of it. This is annoying enough that I just use them as regular headphones, with the noise canceling always turned off. On our last trip we were on a regional jet that was very noisy. My older NC headphones did not remove enough of the noise. I used the HC-500 and was so impressed that I ordered a pair for myself. I am very satisfied with the HC500. My wife says that they are equal to or better than the more expensive Bose.
