Having enlisted legendary leftfield producer Brian Eno, borrowed their album title from a painting by renowned Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and made tantalising remarks about sonic reinvention, the world has been curious (to say the least) to hear what the `new' Coldplay might sound like. Viva La Vida definitely makes some departures from the band's usual formula, which happens to be one of the most commercially successful rock-pop blueprints of recent years. The plangent chords, emotive melodies, stadium-rock rhythms and universal lyrical concerns remain, but Martin and co. have gone out on several limbs here, incorporating instrumental tracks ("Life In Technicolour"), using subtle North African and Latin elements ("Yes", "Strawberry Swing"), and overhauling previously strict verse-chorus-verse structures in favour of slightly more avant arrangements. The old Coldplay still shine through (see tracks like "Violet Hill" and the title song) but even their classic sound feels more muscular and confident. The band's new flourishes, cosmetic and self-conscious as they may be, are enough to make Viva La Vida a welcome break from the old routine--Danny McKenna Amazon.com: Coldplay Photos

This album is as solid as they come every song is unique and i love it. lover in japan is a smash, 42 is hot, the intro is hot, all in all it the best album of the year. I probably listened to this album 100 time or so. Psychologist should use this album as an antidepressant. one Rating: - Coldpplay Viva la VidaI hear this is the best selling CD in the world. I'm a bit of a late-comer to the band, but I truly enjoy the music on this album. It perhaps is not as edgy as some of their earlier releases, perhaps a little to pop for some of the more hard core music fans, but I found it to have just the right mix of both for my taste. I don't buy much new music these days, tending to stick with my classic vinyl from the 60's, 70's and (some) 80's. This is a welcome addition and breath of fresh air, plus it ... Rating: - If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it!It's surprising that a band that makes millions in record sales using their own format would change their music due to a few critics' remarks. I have every Coldplay album and thought I would continue to buy each one until they stopped making music. Sara is probably very disappointed, she's the one I listened to Parachutes with in the office, when we both fell in love with Coldplay. Their next albums were amazing as well but what is this? Besides the instrument arrangements which are pretty decent, ... Read More Rating: - Can they get any better???Viva La Vida grabs you from the opening chords. Chris Martin and company have outdone themselves. This group appeals to any age group (it knows no limits). As a child of the 60's, I love their way with lyrics and music. I am a Coldplay fan and really love this new CD. |
