Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Works only if you are Bruce Lee or able to spend years perfecting techniques
If you have the technical skill of Bruce Lee, or look forward to attaining that level, then this book is for you. If, however, you are like 99.99999% of the rest of the human race, then the techniques in this book are impractical and trying to apply them will get you killed. Look for something else that is suited to the time and effort that you will put into learning how to defend yourself.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Bruce did not write this!
I really don't have much to say other than Bruce Lee did not, and could not have written any of the books in this series, Bruce's first book "Tao of Jeet Kune Do" as far as I know is the only real book written by Bruce Lee and that book wasn't even released until after he died, so I'm only writting this review to say don't be fooled please!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - This book is truly about self defense without all the martial art B.S.
Bruce lee was had the right idea about the fundemental of self defense instead of a bunch of martial art B.S. the reason why i say this is because after taking 3 years of karate it dealt at a minimum with the fundementals of self defense but with pretty much worthless technques and katas, stances etc.
I feel that my karate training was a waste of time for example the teach you to block a punch in karate but in this book they is a more effective way to counter a punch with a side kick and to me that is brillant instead of blocking because sometimes you don't know when someones going to through a punch at you and in my case i felt stupid that could not block a punch and the results were disaterous.
One more thing this book is although has limited techques has more street wise and how to deal with unexpected situations unlike karate instuctors that tells you not to use your karate skills and to me thats martial arts B.S.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Real JKD
You have to own this book. It's the real Bruce Lee demonstrating how his art of jeet kune do can be used to fight bck in self defense. A classic text. Every Bruce Lee/Jeet Kune Do fan owns a copy.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Power Training - Secrets to heavy hitting and a crackling side kick
Learning to hit with power is not based strictly on strength. Power isn't generated from the contractile muscles but from the "impetus and speed of your arm or foot."

The whole body should participate in the impetus-your hips, shoulders, feet, and arms. The inertia of your punch should be a straight line in front of your nose. The punch originates not from the shoulder but from the center of the body. Your arms should be used strictly as bearers of your force; and the correct application of your body should furnish the power. One of the best ways to learn to punch with power is to learn how to use your hips. Pivot on the balls of your feet, with your hips initiate a sudden, rotating motion. Your weight quickly shifts to your other foot as your shoulder automatically rotate after your hips. The idea is to practice the elbow smash against the heavy bag learning the motion of power and then extending the same hip motion to the punch. The rear heel is elevated off the ground. This is the same motion as batter swinging his bat with all his might. The rear foot acts as a spring increasing the power of the punch.

If you master this punch with the right timing of rotating hips, you have a punch more effective than a jab and very instrumental in the success of your sparring and fighting.

Bruce Lee included different types of equipment in his punching practice: the light shield, the sand canvas bag, and the heavy bag. The punch uses the first two knuckles, the index and the middle fingers. Eventually your rear straight and cross will be the most powerful punches available in your arsenal and you will depend on them for knock out power.

By using one pound steel cylinders grasping in the both hands practice delivery of punches with both hands, feet parrallel. The idea is to develop the snapping or whipping blows. You will notice that your punches will automatically snap back at the end of the delivery. The drill builds both speed and power. After a while you will learn to punch with heaviness. The secret behind this is to concentrate or pretend that your empty hands still contain the cylinders as you throw the punches. This extra power or strength is what Lee called flowing power or chi.

To test if your energy is flowing, have someone extend his hand to you and land a chopping blow to his hand. First, do it normally and do it with flowing energy-concentrate on the heaviness of the hand. After each blow ask if he feels a difference. If he does, hit his hand both with the flowing energy and without the flowing energy, after each blow let him decide which one was heavier or lighter. If the blows with flowing energy are heavier, you know your doing it right.

The art of punching is not pushing. In punching the peak or your force or strength is at the point of contact, but with a push, the force begins with the outset of delivery and generally loses its power by the time your arm is fully extended. After hitting the heavy bag, you will find that your punches are deeper and stronger in penetration. Don't throw your punches in a windup motion.

Although your footwork adds to your power. You can knock out your opponent without taking a step or show any strain in your action, if delivery is done correctly. A powerful blow depends on leverage and timing.

Bruce Lees forte was his side kick. The JKD side kick has both trust and snap. Concentrate on heaviness in your foot. In other words, the water is now flowing through your right leg and when it is fully extended by your downwar stomp (gushing of the water), it snaps upward(splashes explosively). Kick straight out instead of down. For extra power twist your hips just at the instance before full extension. Then snap your foot at the full extension for the whipping effect. The sound on the heavy bag should be a cracking thud like a whip if you have kicked through the bag and snapped your foot at the end.
