- Required readingIN MEMORY OF MARIO PONTILLO Since the late 1970's, I have studied Mr. Lee's "Way of the Intercepting fist." I have the 1st editions of all the "best" books on Bruce's work. This book will walk you through the physical aspect of his methods. I recommend you get all the volumes from this series. You will need to start from the beginning; and you do that by emptying your cup so Bruce may fill it. My favorite quote: "Knowing is not enough, you must apply; willing is not enough, you must do." -Bruce Lee Please do not hesitate to check out my Poetry book that I published while in the U.S. Navy in 2003; "Under the Rose: Poetry of Tragedy, Essence, and Romance" Rating: - The Greatest Self Defense Book Ever!Bruce Lee was the greatest Martial artist of all time. In this book he shows his street self defense philosophy. I'm not kidding, buying this book was one of the best choices I've made in a long time. If you want the best techniques of self defense on the street buy this book. I promise you will not be upset. This book shows you the best ways to defend yourself against every type of attack imaginable. From single attackers, to multiple attackers, to suprise attacks, to attacks with weapons! It's like being trained by Bruce himself! A must buy! Rating: - Simple, relativly practicleOverall, this was a good book. The defences shown are very simple, and seem to embody a "just hit him" way of thinking. There are some escape techniques included, which make this book compatable in philosophy to the Krav Maga tape series. There are deficiencies, of course. There are no lessons on where to hit, or how to hit, and no chapters on awareness. Other books in this series basically cover the first two, and taken with them, this book is worth about ****. This book is best for someone with elementry knowledge of martial arts techniques, who wants to use those techniques for street defence. I think it CAN be useful to any schmoe who picks it up, but is better suited to someone who already knows how to throw a side kick. In conclusion, this book's strongest point is it's simplicity, while it's greatest weekness is the lack of awareness training. Rating: - Bruce LeeIt may look like it contradicts JKD, but JKD concepts are different, based in simplicity yet complex to the one taking the hits and grabs. Many of Bruce Lees students and training partners will tell you that he fought completely different from his movies. This book will show you what to really do. Rating: - Works well if you have Bruce Lee's speed and powerIf you're a mere mortal and consequently do not possess the speed and power of Bruce Lee, then I don't recommend this book as a self defense guide. Choose another book or video based on striking (or grappling if that is your preference).
