- Do not buy this gate if......there is a baseboard where you want to mount it. The instructions that come with the gate state explicitly that the gate cannot be mounted because of the unevenness of the wall with a baseboard. This constraint is never mentioned in the advertising for the gate. Hopefully if you read this you will save the hassle and shipping/return costs. Rating: - Solid and safe gate.I now own two of these gates. One for the bottom and the top of the stairs. The 2nd one is a recent addition with a baby while the original one was used for the dog. The first gate has held up so well that when it was time to get another gate I was delighted to see that this model was still available some 9 years later. Your baseboards might cause some problems during install, but if you secure this gate into a stud then you can rest easy that your kids can climb on it and it won't come down. Junior rattles this thing like prison bars sometimes, but I know it's not coming loose. Rating: - Nice gateThe Evenflo top of stair gate is a good find. Relatively easy to install, simple design, and sturdy. We have three of these (3-story house with a second set of stairs). To install, we needed to be a little creative to account for the plaster walls (not great with screws) and baseboard (sticks out further than walls). We attached a small piece of wood (same thickness as baseboard) to the plaster wall. This evened it up and gave the screws something better to latch on to. It's not necessarily pretty, but it works quite well and the baby is safe. Rating: - Simple and reliableVery simple in design. Easy to install. Used wax to give same color as our wood floor. Easy lock and unlock. Rating: - Works great!I checked out a lot of gates and settled on this one. Good price, great functionality and easy to install. A few times I caught my little one grabbing and banging on it at the top of the stairs and it's held it's own just fine. Take the time to make sure you install it right and you're all set.
