Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Works
I'll make this quick and to the point. The X-box does play DVD-R's, does play The Two Towers Extended Version, and the picture is fine. I bought this kit because my three-year-old Philips DVD player had problems playing some DVD-R's. The X-box (and this adapter kit) works fine. I'm not happy about paying thirty bucks - it should be cheaper. Some reviewers have suggested that you should save your X-box the wear and tear and purchase a separate DVD player. I'm not sure what they mean by "wear and tear". This is not a VCR. There is no friction involved, no tape rubbing against playback heads and wearing them out. Playing a DVD is no more harmful to an X-box than playing a video game. I still prefer a good progressive scan DVD player, but this does fine in a pinch.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - No DVD+R/RW DVD-R(RW) support , should be included
INVEST IN A STAND ALONE PLAYER , XBOX IS NOT GOOD FOR PLAYING BACK MOVIES/MUSIC/ETC , its can hardly do games right ... THIS UNIT will NOT let you playback burned copies of audio cds or back-up movies , only store bought dvd's will play , you only need this unit if you want to consolidate two devices into one (dvd player/game console) and you need the space in your entertainment center , otherwise pick up a stand alone player for 40$ from best buy/circuit amazon.com/walmart/target/brandsmart USA/fry's electronics , whatever ...

This is a decent product for the money but it should have been included with the system , it turns your xbox into a dvd player (progressive scan , not bad quality) and consolidates entertainment center real estate if you dont burn your own home videos and can deal with playing back only store bought dvd's , microsoft is taking the digital rights management stuff way too far , I like DVD+R(W) DVD-R(W) and neglecting them was a huge mistake ... honestly not worth the money , you can buy a cheap dvd player at brandsmart/walmart/circuity city/best buy/target whatever for under 40$ that will playback ANY type of media and handles cd's/dvd's with MP3 files too .. unless you just want to consolidate your xbox and dvd player into one space on your entertainment center and play only store bought cd's , this unit/game is not for you , (its just a remote control with a Infared->XBOX USB adapter) .. microsoft if you're reading this , wake up .. you're about to be wiped out by open source :P nobody is going to let you restrict their fair use of content they own , playing back-up audio cds/movies in your devices (new xbox , newer computers) you will never stop people from doing what they want with media they bought

INVEST IN A STAND ALONE PLAYER , XBOX IS NOT GOOD FOR PLAYING BACK MOVIES/MUSIC/ETC , its can hardly do games right ...

I eventually broke down and got a real DVD player even though I already had this.

The X-Box would not play my Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers Extended Edition DVD. It would play on my computer and it plays on my new DVD player but it would not play on my X-Box. I've also had some problems with DVD's skipping/stuttering that I haven't had on my new dedicated DVD player.

I think it's just that the DVD drive the X-Box uses is cheap, so you might run into some problems.

If you really want to watch a lot of movies, I suggest getting a seperate player that was built with DVD viewing in mind. However, the X-Box will play 99% of DVD's just fine, so for this price you wouldn't be amiss to have this for a multi-TV family where the parents want to watch Gone With the Wind and the kids would rather watch pretty much anything on the other TV.

If you're just hoping this will save you some cash, don't say I didn't warn you! Now and then you might find you rented a movie that your X-Box has problems with but a real DVD player wouldn't.

I picked up the DVD playback kit used for cheap. Nowadays, you can pick up a Chinese standalone player on sale for the same price as this remote and save the wear on your XBox, so I personally wouldn't pay retail for it.

Anyways, the remote itself: it's functional and has a logical layout, all the buttons work as they should with a good tactile soft click. The IR receiver picks up signal from a good distance and angle. Take note to all the fanboys: I own an XBox and not a PS2. But the design of the PS2 remote kicks the crap out of the XBox remote. At least it looks like something that belongs in a home theater, instead of a toy. Hopefully the next XBox won't embarrass itself with such a goofy-looking remote.

DVD playback is fine. It has an on-screen display menu for selecting subtitles, audio, etc. While some may prefer separate buttons for these on the remote, it didn't bother me. Picture quality is generally good, using the XBox Hi-Definition pack. I think some of the cheap progressive scan players out there have better picture (better color separation), and are quieter. But the XBox's picture isn't bad. It recognizes every DVD I've put into it, but sometimes it takes a little while to start up. I haven't had any problems passing through AC3/DTS to my receiver through the optical connection.
