- Best trash can ever!I first purchased one of these cans for myself after two cans with the pedal step to lift the lid broke. I was motivated by the touchless concept. After having my can for a year, I am still as thrilled as the first day I got it. We just bought one as a Mother's Day gift for my mother-in-law. She loves it, too. It makes a great gift! Rating: - A mind of its own after five months of useIt was alright at first. Now the lid will open at its own will or not at all even two set of new batteries were changed. Rating: - Hands free trash canLove it! When my hands are full with garbage, I don't have to worry I just wave my hands over the sensor, and the lid opens! The only draw back is that the lid, after less than a year, doesn't stay up when it's supposed to. The lid opens, and then slowly starts to close. Even if I press the 'open' button, it doesn't stay open. I think a hinge or something broke after just the repeated use. I would think it should last several years...not start breaking down after a year. However, I will buy a new one because Amazon had THE best prices...and I do really love having this hands free trash can! (I'd get a larger size though, because I entertain a lot) Rating: - automatic trashcanHow long this will work, I do not know, but the product seems to be made fairly well. I would like the lid to be more sensitive--quicker, as there is sometimes a lag between the motion of my hand and the operation of the lid--but that could be from a "dirty" infrared eye. The product does however, work as advertised, and it is definately a step in the right direction, as far as being a convenience. I would like to see an improvement such as elimination of the plastic ring that holds the trash bag in place. I have had to retrieve this a couple of times since I tossed it. There has to be a better way to retain the trash bag. Rating: - Good concept, could be made better. If you like gadgets, then you will probably like this can. That is the main reason I purchased it. The concept is good but there are enough little "bugs" that may annoy you depending on your personality. I bought my can on Ebay for $60 with free shipping (still arrived directly from the manufacturer). It arrived with a large dent in the front even though the box showed no damage and it was packed in styrofoam on all sides. Since the metal is super thin, I was able to push out the dent and am just left with a small indentation on the corner which is not worth the hassle of sending it back. My can is on the end of my counter right next to our sliding glass door in the kitchen. I was afraid it would be constantly opening due to the traffic in that area. We've actually not experienced that at all. It's more the opposite. We have to walk up to the can and usually wave a hand over the sensor for it to open. It's only opened from walking past 1-2 times in the past week. The instruction manual says the red light should blink every 3 seconds to show the sensor is working. Our light blinks ever 6 seconds. At first I thought maybe it was due to weak batteries but with fresh new ones it does the same thing. We are happy with the weaker sensor though due to the location of the can. I just hope it's not a sign of a unit that will fail prematurely. So to sum up, it seems that you won't know what you are getting until it arrives. Some cans show up dented, others make it there fine. Some have stronger sensors and others are weaker. This kind of variation in the product is why I can only give it 3 stars. It's working out fine for us so far, but it is not a great quality product especially given the price. The metal can is very thin and will definitely dent with the slightest pressure. I'm concerned about the life of the sensor top based on what I've read here and in other reviews. If you can get the can cheap and you like gadgets, then definitely give it a try.
