- FTM16 Needs Help to Work with Windows VistaI bought Family Tree Maker 16 after we lost a hard drive and could not recover any data. With new PCs, the operating system is Microsoft Vista, which has compatibility problems with a lot of software not specifically designed to work with it, including Family Tree Maker 16. Unfortunately, FTM 16 itself was no help in bridging the gap. I finally found a genealogy chat site, on which others discussed the problem and showed how to solve it, by downloading the FTMVistaUpdater.msi file. FTM should do better at helping with such problems, by making this updater easier to find. In addition, when one has given previous permission through FTM for one's genealogy data to be shared on the web, there should be some mechanism whereby all the data one has previously entered in FTM can be accessed by the one who provided it in the first place. If this is possible, I have not found how to do it. Rating: - New version coming out in August 2007FTM 16 is good stuff, but note that a new version is coming out in August, FTM 2008. They don't have any upgrade deal. I didn't know this when I bought FTM 16 in June. I wish I had waited. Rating: - FTM version 16 essentialsI previously used version 3. When I purchased a new computer with Windows Vista, I had to update. I am still learning this version and to date, I find it harder to navigate. Perhaps with time, I may change my opinion. Rating: - EXCELLENT PRODUCTI have really enjoyed using this program. It's easy to enter information and figure out relationships. It is also easy to navigate the program. I especially love the feature where it will search Ancestry.com from the program. Rating: - Generations come togethnerThe thought of doing this was scaring me. I found it very intimidating because it is not very simple! It could be because I don't like to read instructions. But as I keep practicing I love it more and more. It tied in family members that impressed me. I want to give gifts of the results that I find for Christmas. I would recommend this to anyoe. It was and is, worth the price.
