- Silent and PowerfulJust got this product 1 week ago. 2 words: Purely Amazing! It connects immediately to whatever computer you are using, never had to use the extra USB power cable that came with it, everying is PURE plug and play! The drive runs completely silent, and has very very small vibrations when its working. It also doesn't heat up, even in the carrying case which i use that used to belong to a logitech portable number pad. Secondly, the drive is very stable, when its running or transferring something i picked it up, dropped it onto carpet floor, and shook it viciously, without it even noticing, (no rattle or movement inside whatsoever) i hereby recommend this product to anyone who needs a fast and powerful and stable harddrive!!! Rating: - If I can't break it, you probably can't eitherI have had this external hard drive for about 5 months, running it in marathon sessions on my laptop 16+ hours at a time, and all I can say is wow. I've never met an electronics device I couldn't destroy, but this drive is giving me a run for my money. I treat my electronics devices like royalty, but I am accident prone. I decimated two other external drives in a couple of very unfortunate incidents, and decided that I needed something that could take a beating. When I saw this drive I knew it had to be the answer-- it was either this or tether my equipment to a concrete block. It cost more for less space, but that doesn't matter when you break one. I move my laptop from room to room at the house and occasionally take it out for a spin at Starbucks or transport the whole kit & caboodle on an airplane. The durability is comparable to my iPod 160, and I would recommend treating it that way. If you plan on transporting it a lot (in a backpack, briefcase, etc), get a little pouch for it and still be kind to it even though it's got an orange bumper on it that makes it look like something hazmat personnel would use. I use two USB ports to run this drive-- one supplies the power and the other provides access to the drive, and all I had to do was plug it in and start storing. I didn't use the software that came with it and have had no problems whatsoever. I use this mainly for iTunes and graphics storage. The iTunes files play great and I have no problem opening graphics in Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro-- it's just as fast as if the files were on my main drive. I don't think it necessarily goes any faster or slower than the other drives I've used, but I don't transfer large files or large groups of files to it very often, so you'll want to look elsewhere for information on that if speed is of the essence for you. My only complaint is that I am running out of space and will need to buy a second one soon, but I'll probably get another LaCie Rugged with more space. This drive is definitely worth the money for anyone who needs to transport a hard drive a lot, for the accident-prone and for anyone who want the peace of mind knowing that you have the most durable hard drive out there at the best value. Rating: - great qualityafter having three western digital passports fail on me, i tried this lacie drive. i've had it for a year, and it still works great. it comes with a power sharing cable to attach to a second usb port, but i've never needed to use it. it also contains a quality hdd (i think mine is a samsung hdd).
