Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - This album is awesome!
This album is wonderful and features the wonderful compositions of Murray Gold, who has done a great job once again. You don't even need to watch the show to feel the emotion that is portrayed through these musical pieces.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The great music is one of the things that distinguishes the new Dr. Who
In comparing the new Dr. Who to the older series, many people talk about the improvements in the writing, the production values (sets, costumes, etc.), and the overall acting (many of the earlier Doctors were played by good actors, but the same couldn't always be said for many of the other characters). But one area that really is key to what makes the new Dr. Who so good is the music. In the earlier Dr. Who series, the music, apart from the title theme, wasn't very memorable; it was pretty generic TV music. The all changed with the new series, however. Starting with series 1, the music got better. Now, with series 3, it's gotten better still. The series 3 soundtrack is one of the best soundtracks of the year.

The music works very well to enhance the series, portaying a range of emotions, helping create a sense of wonder in places, and really setting the whole tone of the series. A few tracks, in particular, are worth calling out:

"All the Stange Strange Creatures" establishes both an action pace and at the same time a sense of awe. It works through several variations, using various instruments, and is one of the best pieces on the album.

"A Dream of a Normal Death" and "The Doctor Forever" also are awe inspiring (the use of human voice in the "The Doctor Forever" is marvelous). They also help capture something in the new Dr. Who that wasn't present in the older shows: a sense of loss, a sense that even a happy ending can have a touch of tragedy about it.

This continues on what may be the best track on the album, "This Is Gallifrey: Our Childhood, Our Home," which establishes both a longing as well as a thrilling sense of wonder.

Finally, it's worth mentioning the very Danny Elmanesque "The Gridlocked Cassinis" and "Donna's Theme," both of which are quite playful, interjecting a lot of fluffy fun into the album.

I could go on. Almost all the tracks are good, and most are quite memorable. As I said earlier, this is one of the best soundtracks of the year.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Fantastic music
If you are a Dr Who fan and enjoy the music just as much as the stories (let's face it, the music is part of the story) then this is a great little CD to have. You will know instinctively which piece of music belongs to which episode or character. Well worth it. Enjoy

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Great Stuff!
The music is excellent for the third series of the new Doctor Who. I particularly loved the creepy feeling that the Blink music had -- still creeps me out when I hear it! The best part, I think, is all the music surrounding the three part finale -- so energetic and so ominous! The only disappointment is that the "Devil in Me" song was not done by the original actress. I'm not sure why it is decided, now twice, that the original performer should not render that performance for the soundtrack. The soundtrack to the first series has a very non-compatible voice singing "A Song in Ten", or whatever the name of that song is -- the one that is sung during the first Christmas Special "The Christmas Invasion". That singer is far better a lounge or jazz singer where this song is actually more energetic and light hearted. The original singer was great, but they, unwisely in my opinion, chose someone else to perform it. Both of these soundtracks are great, but honestly I like the Third Series soundtrack better. I was disappointed when they didn't include the new theme song. Other than that, it is really great!! :)

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Almost great, but not quite
This compilation of music from Season 3 of the latest incarnation of Doctor Who offers a lot, but not a lot of it offers the best. For example, there is more music from the two part stories "Human Nature" and "Family of Blood" than there is from "Runaway Bride" which to me was a much more exciting and enjoyable story. Additionally, a great deal of music seems to be missing from the three-episode "The Master" arc that concludes the season. But there are some wonderful gems. "This is Gallifrey - Our Childhood, Our Home" is a beautiful, evocative piece that pops up all over the final episodes. But much of the music of The Master's return is either truncated or not the same mix as shown in the episodes. That said, the excerpt of "Yana" does contain some of the most exciting music I've yet encountered in any of the episodes.

So, is this a buy worthy soundtrack? Definitely. Does it match the quality of the first release? Not quite. But that shouldn't stop any Who fan.
