The Dukes of Hazzard Casting In 1978 when the casting call came out for the stars of the Dukes of Hazzard. John Schneider landed the part of Bo Duke by pretending to be a country boy from Snellville, Georgia who was 24 years old. He was really 18 at the time. Check out what John is doing now at Supermantv's Smallville cast page
Catherine Bach was 23 years old and was working on her movie career with films like "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot" and the "Midnight Man". She was talked into trying out for the Dukes of Hazzard by a friend. She was shocked when she actually got the role of Daisy Duke. Tom Wopat was acting at a theatre in Michigan, and was preparing to go on unemployment when he landed the part of Luke Duke.
Denver Pyle was 58 years old at the time. He was chosen to play Uncle Jessie who had taken in cousins Bo, Luke, and Daisy Duke whose parents had all been killed in the same automobile accident, according to Gy Waldron creator and producer of the Dukes. Denver Pyle was famous for numerous westerns including the Grizzly Adams, but besides playing Uncle Jessie most people remember him as the head of the Darlin' clan on the Andy Griffith show.
Sorrell Booke was cast as Jefferson Davis 'Boss' Hogg. Sorrell Booke was a classical actor trained at Yale University who had never used a southern accent in his life before playing Boss Hogg.
James Best was picked for the role of Rosco P. Coltrane. James got the idea for the famous Rosco laugh from entertaining his kids. According to Best he played Rosco from the perspective that Rosco never really grew up and didn't really know he was doing wrong. He just loved hot pursuit cause it was fun. Before the Dukes James Best had played in a ton of movies and guest starred on tv classics like Gunsmoke, Andy Griffith, Bonanza, the Mod Squad, the Twilight Zone, the Rifleman, and the Gene Autrey Show.
And then there was Ben Jones who was cast as the mechanic and friend to the Dukes, Cooter Davenport. Ben Jones went on to Congress and served a spell, kinda like Davy Crockett. Then of course there was Enos Strate played by Sonny Shroyer who got his own show for a spell, and Rick Hurst as Deputy Cletus Hogg.
