2001 X-Files creator Chris Carter has announced the current season of his hit series is set to be the last. The scriptwriter is concentrating on The Lone Gunmen - a spin-off about Mulder's conspiracy-geek friends. He says if the new show is a success, the sci-fi series will end in May. A second X-Files film is planned for this year. He says, "May's two-hour season finale will be a cliffhanger either for next season, if we return, or for the movie." Actor David Duchovny, who plays Mulder, is not expected back for a new series, but has agreed to appear in the film.

Robert Patrick picks up Mulder's Slack

This season David Duchovny is scheduled to appear in only 11 episodes as his character Fox Mulder is missing. Currently on the season premier of the X-files Robert Patrick's character John Doggett and Scully are searching for Mulder. Not only that but Scully is pregnant, and John Doggett is really getting on her nerves.  Robert Patrick's  interaction with Gillian Anderson was hilarious.

Robert Patrick is best known as the evil terminator on T2. According to TV Guide he is really excited to be a part of the X-files. He is known to the crew as LMG ( Liquid Metal Guy). He has also said he is thrilled to play a good guy.

Those fans who hated last season's Cops meets X-files will be glad to know that Chris Carter vows this season will be without such comic touches.

News Flash  Sept 2000  Duchovny to Only Appear in Only 11 Episodes This Season.

Series production is set to start soon for the 8th season of the X-files, and  Chris Carter is searching for a replacement for David Duchovny, who will appear in only 11 episodes this season. According to the New York Daily News, Fox is seriously considering four actors — Lou Diamond Phillips (La Bamba), Bruce Campbell (Jack of All Trades), Robert Patrick (Cop Land) and Hart Bochner (The Breakup) — to co-star opposite Gillian Anderson.

Duchovny will appear in only in eleven episodes this season under the terms of his 20 million dollar contract. He will appear in the first two installments next fall and won't be back until around the 13th episode. In the meantime,  Anderson's character, Dana Scully, will team up with a new partner to search for Mulder, who was abducted by aliens in last season's finale.

X-files may be entering its last season, Anderson has said she does not want to do another season after this. We can only hope that there will be X-files movies to come similar to the way Star Trek has continued.
