Save Money on Electric Bill

Save Money on Electric Bill

I found a good strategy for those wanting to shave off a little on their electric bills in the winter. Using it we actually cut our bill by 50 dollars even the billing month was colder than the one before. It’s kind of simple really, but it does make a difference. At night time grab a bunch of blankets to cover up with in bed, and turn down the thermostat as low as you can stand it. We set ours on 62. We probably could go even lower really. Don’t worry about being cold when you get up because I’ve found that I’m actually kind of hot for a while from taking in all that heat from the blankets all night.

Wear extra clothes during the day and gradually turn the thermostat down. Ours is about 67 in the day. It’s ok to turn the heat back up when it’s time to take a shower.

Next in accordance with getting the thermostat lower at night you may want to invest in some warm pajamas as well.

Hey it’s the little simple stuff that works best. Just a few degrees on the thermostat really makes a difference come bill time.

Sylvester Stallone Ab Workouts

Everybody knows Sylvester Stallone from the Rocky and Rambo movies, and the great physical conditioning he undergoes for his movies. Even now in his 60’s he looks better than most guys half his age.  I found this video clip of Stallone detailing some of the exercises he does for his abs.  Check it out.

The first thing Stallone recommends is the old fashioned ab wheel. I’ve got one myself, and after seeing this I think I’ll start adding it back to my  regular workout schedule.

Next Sly grabs an exercise ball also known as a swiss ball, ab ball, or therapy ball. They are really easy to use.  You just lay your back on them and crunch. Sly says the ball helped him after he hurt his back. Then he shows his leg lift routine.

Then the exercise he used to cut up for Rocky III, the crunch on a decline bench with rotation. Rock says you can use a broomstick or whatever behind your neck while you rotate.

Next Sly and his trainer pal recommend using weight resistance in working abs.

Here’s another video clip of Stallone training for his upcoming movie the Expendables. You get a good look at his abs that are still perfect after all these years.

What to do when Computer Viruses Won't Go Away!

What to do when Computer Viruses Won’t Go Away!

Recently, I had a virus that just wouldn’t go away on my computer. It caused my Windows OS to not be able to perform updates.  It caused some malware programs I downloaded to not work, and even after I got some software that did work it would replicate itself.

Now I had an anti-virus spy sweeper program that I thought made me safe, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough.  It took no less than 5 different software programs to rid myself of this virus.  At least I hope it’s gone. No signs of it in the last few days, but these things are sneaky.

Computer Virus Symptoms
First here’s symptoms you might want to take a look at. In case you have a computer virus and don’t know it.

1. Browser redirects to other pages. Careful you go looking for a anti-virus solution and it winds up redirecting you to a page the crooks that made the virus want you to go to.

2. Run msconfig from the run command box and check out your startup programs. See anything that shouldn’t be there. I noticed they tend to make the paths and the file names in lower case.

3. Computer just acts weird in general. Slow to load.

4. Windows will not update. Try updating Windows from the control panel. If you get errors. You have probably picked up a virus.

Course of Action

1. The first thing you do is try to update Windows.  If that fails go to Microsoft’s site and try to manually update your site with the latest service pak.  Here’s a good page to check out from Microsoft on one  virus http://www.microsoft.com/security/worms/Conficker.aspx . It also links to this page that will do a scan of your computer http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm . I had to do a full scan.  Afterwards, I was able to update Windows.

2. If that doesn’t work go to download.com and download software to get rid of viruses and malware. I found Spyware Terminator to be really good.  To find a list of the best just do a search for malware at download.com.

3.  When you run the msconfig to look at your start up programs. If you see things you aren’t sure about. Look them up in a search engine. Be careful though remember to make sure you land on the page you clicked on because if you have a virus you might get redirected.

4. Now once you’ve run the Spyware Terminator, rescan from http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm and if you still have a virus go back to download.com and grab another free anti- spyware malware program.  I ran the virus programs first before using onecare.live.com several times. I can’t say for sure if I had find oncecare.live.com whether or not it would have solved my issue using it alone, but just be warned viruses are getting harder and harder to get rid of these days. So be careful. Keep a good anti-virus program running all the time.

Also if you don’t have it already. Microsoft has free anti-virus software called Microsoft Security Essentials and a free anti-spyware program called Windows Defender. To be honest it looks like to me that the days of paying for anti-virus protection may be over.

Is there a problem with Smokeless Cigerettes

I can definitely sympathize with folks trying to quit smoking.  I smoked for years before finally giving it up.  I was curious when I saw the smokeless cigarette ads on TV. I didn’t need it at this point. I haven’t smoked in years, but it still got my attention. Unfortunately, for those trying it, it might not be all it’s cracked up to be.

Read this news story. According to a Knoxville, Tn news organization a local woman ordered the “Smokeless cigarettes”, and feels stuck in a deal she doesn’t want. According to the article she agreed to a deal to charge her $99.10 out of her checking account and $45.85 every so often for refills.  After deciding it was too costly she tried to cancel, but cannot get anyone on the phone.

“I was either put on hold and no answer or they would answer and disconnect after an hour-and-a-half,” she said.

Mary hoped she wouldn’t have to use an ash tray again, but ordering the Smoke 51 Trio has disappointed her.

I think it pays to really be careful about any deal that requires a contract or a monthly fee.  It could be harder to get out of then you think.

History of DVD Recorders

A DVD recorder (also known as a DVDR, mainly outside of the UK and Ireland), is an optical disc recorder that records video onto blank writeable DVD media. Such devices are available as either installable drives for computers or as standalone components for use in studios or home theater systems.

As of March 1, 2007 all new tuner-equipped television devices manufactured or imported in the United States must include digital tuners. The US Federal Communications Commission has interpreted this rule broadly so as to include apparatus such as computer video capture cards, videotape recorders and standalone DVD recorders. NTSC DVD recorders are therefore undergoing a transformation, either adding a digital ATSC tuner or removing over-the-air television tuner capability entirely.

Originally, DVD recorders supported one of three standards: DVD-RAM, DVD-RW (using DVD-VR), and DVD+RW (using DVD+VR), none of which are directly compatible. As a general rule, however, most current drives support both the + and – standards, while few support the DVD-RAM standard, which is not directly compatible with standard DVD readers.

Recording speed is generally denoted in values of X (similar to CD-ROM usage), where 1X in DVD usage is equal to 1.321 MB/s, roughly equivalent to a 9X CD-ROM. In practice, this is largely confined to computer-based DVD recorders, since standalone units generally record in real time, that is, 1X speed.

DVD recorders use a laser (usually 650 nm red) to read and write DVDs. The reading laser is usually not stronger than 5 mW, while the writing laser is considerably more powerful. The faster the writing speed is rated, the stronger the laser is. DVD burner lasers often peak at about 100-400 mW in continuous wave (some are pulsed). Some laser hobbyists have discovered ways to extract the laser diode from DVD burners and modify them to create laser apparatus that can cause burning.

Computer Based
DVD recorder drives have become standard equipment in many, though not all, computer systems currently on the market, after being initially popularized by the Pioneer/Apple SuperDrive; aftermarket drives as of early 2007 can cost as little as $23 [2]. DVD recorder drives can be used in conjunction with DVD authoring software to create DVDs near or equal to commercial quality, and are also widely used for data backup and exchange. As a general rule, computer-based DVD recorders can also handle CD-R and CD-RW media; in fact, a number of standalone DVD recorders actually use drives designed for computers.

Most internal drives are designed with parallel ATA interfaces, with serial ATA becoming more readily available. External drives almost always use USB 2.0 or IEEE 1394, with eSATA becoming an option as well.

DVD recorder drives are required[by whom?]to respect DVD region codes when reading a disc, but do not impose a region code on written discs unless the code has specifically been written into the disc’s content.

DVD duplication systems are generally built out of stacks of these drives, connected through a computer-based backplane.

When the standalone DVD recorder first appeared on the Japanese consumer market in 1999, these early units were very expensive, costing between $2500 and $4000 USD. However, as of early 2007, DVD recorders from notable brands are selling for US$200 or €150 and less, with even lower “street prices”. Early units supported only DVD-RAM and DVD-R discs, but the more recent units can record to all major formats DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R DL and DVD+R DL. Some models now include mechanical hard disk drive-based digital video recorders (DVRs) to improve ease of use. Standalone DVD recorders generally have basic DVD authoring software built in; however, the appearance of the finished DVD is very basic and usually completely under the control of the unit.

Some believed that DVD recorders would supersede the VCR as the standard television-recording device; however as technology progresses, Panasonic introduced the world’s first Blu-ray disc recorder which is capable of recording both DVDs and Blu-ray discs.

Advantages and Disadvantages of DVD Recorders

DVD recorders have several technical advantages over VCRs, including:

  • Superior video and audio quality
  • Easy-to-handle smaller form-factor disc media, and more durable than magnetic tape.
  • Random access to video chapters without rewinding or fast-forwarding (serial access)
  • Onscreen multilingual subtitles and labeling not available on VCRs
  • Reduced playback wear and tear
  • High-quality digital copying, with little or no generation loss
  • Improved editing, at least on rewritable media
  • Playlisting
  • No risk of accidentally recording over existing content or unexpectedly running out of space during recording
  • Easy to find recordings due to chapter menus

It does have some disadvantages

  • Slow initial access/load times due to the optical nature of the disc
  • Limited rewritability on DVDRW(+RW) discs (typically around 1000). DVD-RAM is better suited for high frequency re-recording (around 100,000 rewrites)
  • Relatively short life of the laser diodes (average of about 2 years depending on usage).

However, an inconvenience exists in which DVDs recorded with DVD recorders must be finalized to view in other DVD players. (This disadvantage does not apply to DVD-RAM or DVD+RW discs, which require no finalization due to their ‘random access’ nature.) Also, the implementation of MPEG-2 compression used on most standalone DVD recorders is required to compress the picture data in real time, producing results that may not be up to the standard of professionally rendered DVD video, which can take days to compress.

The United States is converting its over-the-air television broadcasts to digital “ATSC” in June 2009, however this will have very limited impact in ending the need for DVD recorders to perform realtime MPEG-2 encoding or transcoding. The only setup where ATSC could conceivably eliminate MPEG-2 encoding/transcoding in a DVD recorder would be where an antenna is hooked directly into a DVD recorder that has an integrated ATSC tuner. Even then however, the DVD recorder will have to transcode the ATSC MPEG-2 into DVD-Video-legal MPEG-2 if the ATSC MPEG-2 stream isn’t already DVD-Video-compatible. This would require transcoding for all high-definition broadcasts and some if not all standard-definition broadcasts. The same general situation applies to digital cable service; only DVD recorders with integrated digital cable (“QAM”) tuners can possibly avoid transcoding, and then only if the digital cable system is already sending a DVD-Video-compatible MPEG-2 stream, which again requires transcoding of all HD content and some if not all SD content. All other setups (digital cable box’s analog outputs to DVD recorder, satellite box’s analog outputs to DVD recorder, DVD recorder tuning and recording analog cable channels which are still permitted after 2/2009, etc.) usually always involve an analog step with MPEG-2 encoding being necessary inside the DVD recorder.

A number of manufacturers have combined DVD recorders with mechanical hard disk drive-based digital video recorders, allowing for recording to large fixed disks, and the ability to view these recordings off the hard disk at a later date.

In Japan, AVCREC recorders, which are able to record MPEG-2 or AVC high definition video from ISDB broadcast with or without re-encoding, get increasingly popular. Initially, AVCREC recorders use DVD recordable discs, but newer models are able to record onto Blu-ray discs as well onto hard disk drives.

Save Money on College Text Books

Ok, so if you are going to college whether you are getting a grant or not you probably still want to shave some money off of text books. New ones are outrageous. I don’t know where they come up with the idea a book should ever, and I mean ever go over a 100 bucks.

I’m sure if you go to college you’ve guessed that used books are better than new, but there are now other options for purchasing text books cheaper like cheapesttextbooks.com, booksprice.com,  or even Amazon.

Another option is downloading books online. Sites like Coursesmart.com sell subscriptions to digital copies of more than 7,000 textbooks. TextbookMedia.com allows students to download textbooks for free. You can also rent textbooks on Chegg.com.

See our education books section for a lot more books related to college.

Save Money on Phone Bills

Well these days you can now have DSL Internet service and not have to have a phone service on top of that.  A lot of people are just using cell phones and getting rid of their home phones.

There’s a new thing called magicjack . It costs $39.95 and includes a one-year license for calls in the U.S. and Canada; after that, service costs $19.95 per year. That’s a year, but of course I have a fear myself going into it.  Seems a little too good to be true.  It’s getting a lot of good press, but there are as you would expect some unhappy people as well.  I found a whole site of unhappy people http://magic-jack.pissedconsumer.com/. Now I’m not saying it’s a bad deal.  I’m just like you. I research what other people say and that’s all I have to go on. Perhaps, I’ll give a try after people I know personally are on it.   I can recommend one thing for you if you are like me and undecided. I called a few months back ready to cancel my phone service and use cell phones instead. I got a good discount on my phone service for 6 months.  It never hurts to call.

Oh and for something similiar to magicjack but a lot more expensive is Vonage. It’s a monthly payment instead of yearly.

While we are on the subject of phones. Here’s some great phones to shop for.

The Fastest Way to Lose Weight

People push diet pills, exercise equipment, diet plans, and on on on, but really when you get down to it, besides just plain old exercise, the most important key to losing weight is controlling what you put in your mouth and these days folks are having a really hard time with that thanks to one culprit, high fructose corn syrup.

Sure people are less active these days. That’s one big element, but the biggest problem I truly believe is high fructose corn syrup. Studies have been done to suggest it causes us to eat without filling completely full. You just want more and more food like a cigerette addict. I can tell you that as a long time avid weight lifter no matter what I did I couldn’t lose any fat till I took action on eliminating every food or drink with high fructose corn syrup from my diet. That really cut out a lot of stuff, but on the positive sign it made me go to basic healthy foods that I should have been eating all along.

These days I’ve found I can indeed tolerate healthy foods like avacodoes, brocoli, carrots, apples, bananas, unprocessed meats, etc. I’m not really missing all that junk food I used to eat anymore. Why? Because I’m not addicted to it anymore, I believe. I lost 10 pounds or more in a few months.

HFC is cheap so don’t expect the food industry to voluntarily start removing it from their foods any time soon.

The best way I’ve found to really deal with it is a zero tolerance policy. The good news is it allows you to eat as much as you want to at a much greater degree when you get rid of it, because you fill satisfied faster.

Try taking it out of your diet for a while. You certainly have nothing to lose except weight. Look on the backs of every can, box, or bag, and read very carefully. The safest way is just eat only natural products. Stay away from processed foods. Oh, and do exercise of course.  A body that doesn’t exercise is like a car that sits in the yard for 10 years. The tires rot, the paint job fades, the belts rot, etc so don’t be an old car.  Get up and move and fill your tank with the good stuff.
