The Home Invaders: Tubbs couldn't have
chosen a better week for his vacation. Crockett's called in at 3
A.M. to find out he and all available detectives are being
transferred to Robbery. A vicious team of thieves are breaking into
occupied houses and brutalizing the families, earning them the title
"The Home Invaders". Crockett's happy about it for one
reason-- he gets to work with his old mentor, Lt. John Malone. In
the briefing, it's found that their modus operandi matches
burglaries in New York and Chicago, so these might be the same guys.
However, Castillo's not happy about the almost-empty files his
detectives are being handed. How much work has been done on these
cases? An interview with a victimized, crying mother gives Crockett
and Castillo a vital clue to their M.O.--the first question to the
victims is, "Is there anyone else in the house?" Castillo
plays a long shot by requesting the paperwork from the Chicago
robberies, and it turns out there was a simultaneous rash of call
girls getting beaten. Joplin and Calabrese are put on the angle. But
that night, another invasion goes down, and this time, a street cop
happens on the scene. The lookout doesn't even hesitate on blowing
him away. Malone briefs Crockett and Castillo the next morning at
the scene. Castillo has more questions about Malone's investigating.
Why wasn't the scene sealed off? And forensics could be doing more,
so why aren't they? Malone walks out on Castillo, but when Crockett
confronts him, he can't ignore it. A pair of roughed-up call girls
found by Joplin and Calabrese may have a description on one of the
thugs, but they don't find his picture in the mugshots. Castillo,
Crockett, Malone and his Sergeant, Harrety go over the victim
questionnaires and finds one common link-- all get their hair done
at the Hair Emporium. Joplin and Calabrese check the place out and
find nothing among the employees, but someone else there my be the
culprit-- a parking valet. The call girls are rushed down and they
positively ID the guy. Switek and Zito observe him making copies of
a customer's house keys. Castillo and Crockett follow the woman, a
Mrs. Goldman and warn her. That night, Switek, Zito and Harrety
follow the valet to a meeting his partners, then along the streets.
Crockett and Castillo are lying in wait at the Goldman house. It
comes over the radio that the tail is lost, but the invaders still
don't show. They call Mrs. Goldman at the station and she realizes
almost too late that the car she was driving wasn't hers-- but her
daughter's! She gives the address and Crockett and Castillo race
over. Castillo jumps the lookout, choking him into unconsciousness.
Crockett can see the couple bound, gagged and being terrorized by
two masked thugs. With no backup and no choice, Castillo and
Crockett crash into the house from different directions, shooting
both invaders dead. The last one is upstairs looking for jewels and
doesn't last much longer. Mrs. Goldman takes the cops out to lunch
in appreciation. When Castillo and Malone arrive late, Sonny gets up
to welcome them, but receives a shock. Malone has turned in his
badge, saying one sloppy case is one too many. Crockett and Castillo
have to agree that it would be almost impossible to fill his shoes.
