The Dutch Oven:
Bad enough to go into harm's way by going undercover for a
drug deal, but Rico and his supplier quickly find themselves on the
wrong end of the guns-this is a rip-off! The thieves don't hurt
them, but take off with the cash and the drugs. Sonny and Trudy
floor it in pursuit of the thieves's car until it reaches a dead
end. The foolish driver jumps out and opens fire on Sonny. Bad move.
Trudy pumps four rounds into the shooter. Moving in Sonny informs
her the shooter is dead. She starts to shake, apparently, having
never killed anyone before. Trudy tries going home, but ends up
looking for an old boyfriend, David. He and his band are playing in
a club downtown, and he sights her teary face form the stage. David
comes over to her and orders champagne, but they're soon interrupted
by Adonis, another band member. When David gets up from the table,
Adonis propositions Trudy not for a night in bed, but a night of
getting high. Later in bed, Trudy relates what happened to David. He
holds her all night long, and their love starts to rekindle. The
next morning, two jerks from Internal Affairs are giving Trudy a
hard time, and Sonny is getting fed up over how Gallo, a
paper-pusher who hasn't patrolled the streets in years, is pegging
the both of them as John Wayne types who jumped the gun and took the
suspect down without even trying for a peaceful resolution. Sonny
stresses that the shooting was self-defense under combat conditions,
and later must reassure Trudy that IAD's Monday morning
quarterbacking doesn't mean a thing. Bottom line, "They weren't
there! We were." Trudy refuses voluntary R & R, telling
Castillo that she'd prefer to keep working even as she's making
peace with the incident. But undercover out on the street, a guy
pulls up offering $50 for her to 'initiate' the two underage kids in
his backseat. She tells him to pull into an alley, then pulls her
badge. Gina has to restrain her partner from pounding the panderer
into the dirt! (Not that he didn't deserve it.) That night, Trudy
accompanies David to a party, but can't shake her cop mentality. She
wants to arrest everyone doing drugs that she sees. What's worse,
Trudy witnesses Adonis roughing up a client who can't afford his
dose of "heavy sugar". She tells Sonny she thinks the
parties are a front for the drug deals, and he takes it to the rest
of the squad. She's pretty certain that David is clean, but Adonis
is one of his oldest friends. How can she take one down without
hurting the other? Rico shadows Adonis and finds him meeting with
his supplier, Ramon De Oyos. Trudy subtly confronts David and
confirms that he's clean. But Trudy must decide whether to proceed
with stinging Adonis or playing it safe with David. After a long
stroll and several flashbacks through the shooting and the Adonis
investigation, Trudy finds Adonis and introduces him to a
friend(Sonny) who needs a one-time score. The deal is arranged at
the club where David's playing. Castillo again tries to take her out
of the action, but she refuses. Adonis won't make the deal without
her. At the club, Trudy watches Adonis add filler to the shipment to
make a full 3 keys. A sample passes Sonny's purity test, and Adonis
turns around to find Trudy pointing her gun at him. Adonis goes to
put his hands on the bar, but throws the coke in Sonny's face. Trudy
backs away as Adonis approaches her, not wanting to shoot again, but
continues to order him into submission. Adonis is blindsided by a
punch from Sonny. Now he's busted. So far he's not rolling on De
Oyos. David storms in furious, feeling used. Trudy tries to explain
that she can't change from a cop to a civilian just by taking off
her badge. It's over. David leaves Trudy with a clear conscience,
but a broken heart.
