Bought And Paid
For:
Stan
and Larry are getting a little impatient. How much shopping can Gina
do with them waiting? Inside the store, Gina gives her maid Odette
her shopping list and money, mentioning there’s a little surprise
for her back at Gina’s house. Odette swears that it’s too much,
but Gina insists.
“Never argue
with a cop.”
Fortunately,
they’re not late for the stakeout, where they meet Sonny, Rico and
Trudy. But as they storm the warehouse, their informant reveals that
he received a bum tip. These guys were trying to shut down ‘coke
distributors’, but the coke was legal… Coca-Cola! They were
trying to buy a load of artificial sweetener stolen by Izzy.
Outside, before anyone but Sonny can laugh, Izzy and his partner
have made off with the Bug Van!
Things
are getting worse. Gina brings Sonny home for dinner, only to find
Odette cowering bare on the living room floor, having just been
molested. Sonny dashes back outside, leaping into the Daytona after
a fleeing figure. Sonny follows him all the way to the causeway
before a few other drivers block the road for him. The suspect is a
Lamborghini-driving, cologne-soaked playboy named Nico Arroyo. “25,
Latin, gold-plated.” He’s being booked when Sonny calls Gina
at the hospital, but Odette’s description doesn’t match Arroyo
at all! Plus she claims to barely remember anything. They have no
choice but to turn him loose.
Sonny
joins Rico, Stan and Larry at the crime scene. Rico ran a check on
Arroyo and finds he’s the son of General Antonio Arroyo, a former
Bolivian government official who escaped a coup and came to
Miami
with enough
to buy a mansion and some banks. Larry finds the dress torn off
Odette by her attacker, and Sonny’s not surprised to find it
dreched in cologne—Arroyo’s scent. Sonny confronts Gina with
their findings. She knows that Odette worked for a Bolivian General
once, and on questioning Odette, she finds out that he got away with
attacking another maid in his home country. Now she’s scared to
have him prosecuted for fear that she’ll be sent back to
Haiti
. A
particularly emotional speech from Gina convinces Odette to go ahead
and press charges. Gina and Trudy haul Arroyo back downtown. Not for
long, though. His lawyer has him out the same night, and the next
morning Castillo must break it to Gina that despite all the hard
evidence, the D.A. wants to drop the charges, calling it all a ‘He
said, she said’ situation. Gina nearly explodes, but persuades
Castillo to allow her to try and find the other maid. After a few
hours, Stan, Larry, and Trudy have nothing but a name, Nelly Gurrero.
But Rico announces the Bug Van has been found, though Stan and Larry
have to muscle Izzy into reloading the surveillance equipment. After
that, they get him searching for the girl.
That
night, Odette goes out with the squad to Club Fatale, where the Bug
Van was found, where Odette seems to find just what she needs on the
dance floor with Rico. But the next morning, Sonny must inform Gina
that Odette came in early and dropped the charges, with her mother,
who lives in
Haiti
, beside her.
The Arroyos have all too obviously bought them off! Storming to her
house, Gina and Trudy find Odette getting out of a limo belonging to
Arroyo’s lawyer. She admits she took nothing for herself, but the
take for Odette’s mother was $10,000 and a first-class ticket
home. Gina flies into a rage at Odette, Castillo, even Sonny, but
nothing can be changed. Sonny manages to calm her down, but Gina has
already been proven right. Going back to make amends, she finds the
house surrounded by police and an ambulance. Arroyo had been there
and left his knife, which Odette used to slit her wrists. (or did
she?) Gina reads her suicide note, and the next day confronts Arroyo
at his mansion, scandalizing him before his rich friends. Taking the
rest of the day off, Gina tries to turn in early. But in the night,
she hears someone enter the room, she pulls her gun from the
nightstand, not needing to see to know it’s Arroyo. He drops his
knife, then laughs as he advances on her. Gina doesn’t hesitate to
blow him away, watching until the perp stops breathing. Sleep well,
Gina. You’ve got nothing to be sorry for.
