The Great McCarthy:

Tubbs gets a shock when dispatch directs them to a half-renovated bank. Criminals still pull bank jobs? Following the fleeing figure up two flights, the bust brings them an annoying disappointment. It’s Izzy Moreno, Cuban refugee, part-time informer, and the goofiest con man in South Florida! Desperate to stay on the outside, he’s got a big name to give up: Louis McCarthy, “The Tintoretto Of Smugglers”, who’s had Izzy chauffer kilos of coke out of state for him. Crockett & Tubbs are all set to write him off when it’s revealed that McCarthy has a sizable shipment coming in on the weekend.

Also on the weekend, McCarthy’s in a boat race, round trip to the Bahamas. Tubbs meets with him on the marina, posing as a boat enthusiast with a speeder and a hotshot driver (Crockett, of course). McCarthy invites him to see the race, but no more entries are being accepted. On the other hand, Tubbs notices Del Gifford sitting with him. As one of their informants, why hasn’t he given them anything on McCarthy? His records show hundreds of thousands of dollars of dollars in profit, but from one exclusive men’s talior shop. (And the I.R.S. bought this?) The one discrepancy was money skimmed and invested on the side for Vanessa, McCarthy’s girlfriend and employee. Tubbs is a little smitten with Vanessa once he goes in posing as the racer again, particularly after she fits him for a couple sport jackets and invites him and Crockett to brunch with McCarthy. Tubbs bristles when Crockett accepts. Once there, sparks seem to fly between Tubbs and Vanessa, but McCarthy flatly turns down Crockett’s offer to buy 150 kilos of coke from him. They do get invited to a bigger party that night, and after a meeting with Castillo, there’s only one thing they can do to get in closer--get in the race. Just before the party, Crockett & Tubbs search McCarthy’s speedboat, but there’s no place on it to hide the drugs. Crockett lays into Tubbs about his closeness to Vanessa, but he insists that it’s just playing up the cover to rattle McCarthy. A few familiar faces appear at the party, namely Del Gifford and Izzy. While Del is dancing with Vanessa, Crockett finds McCarthy in the pool room and makes a crazy wager over 8-ball--a spot in the race against Crockett’s Ferrarri! Fortunately for Crockett, a hard-fought game ends in his favor. As Tubbs and Vanessa dance, their romance is slipping even further away from strictly business. Crockett twice refuses to speak to Izzy for fear of his blowing their cover, but then a woman screams. Del Gifford is found out on the pier, shot to death. The next morning, Crockett & Tubbs try to pin down a motive for McCarthy. Was Del exposed as an informant? Did he get caught skimming for Vanessa? An act of jealousy? And Crockett won’t stop with his suspicion that things between Tubbs and Vanessa are getting personal. Castillo goes over the ballistics with them, then tells them to get the entry money from Calabrese and Joplin, who are wrapping up a one-key bust before the race. They don’t much like Crockett dropping in unannounced, but he turns out to be useful when the amateur dealer makes a break for it. They grudgingly give him the money. After a romantic evening with Vanessa, Tubbs joins Crockett and Zito in the race. Entry #5 gets a slightly late start, but they quickly move into contention. Near the turnaround, McCarthy’s boat disappears from behind them, and suddenly reappears in the lead! Crockett realizes that #6 is really two identical boats, and McCarthy himself is piloting the second one, with the drugs on board. Tubbs radios to Castillo, and he has two Coast Guard cutters blocking any sea escape. Zito guides their speedboat to victory, and McCarthy is quietly arrested by Switek after making a gentlemanly concession to Crockett & Tubbs. That night, Tubbs is celebrating with Vanessa, just as Crockett is with Calabrese. But Izzy comes dashing onto the boat, handing Crockett a gun. The prints and ballistics confirm what Izzy saw the night before-- Vanessa killed Gifford, because he threatened to expose her skimming. Crockett and Izzy go the Vanessa’s home, and Tubbs answers the door. Reluctantly, Tubbs takes her in.
