Stone’s War:

Staggering out of Central America, Ira Stone is back in Miami and is again asking for Crockett’s help. He claims to have an exclusive tape of American soldiers raiding a Nicaraguan village, and someone who doesn’t want the story on the news has goons following him. Sonny agrees to let him crash on the boat for one night.

“You’re lucky I’m not in Bunco.”

Tubbs doesn’t buy Stone’s story, either. At least Castillo has better news for Crockett. His beloved Daytona has been replaced, since the department confiscated the late Bunny Barrigan’s now-white Ferrari Testarossa.

“340 horsepower, 180 miles per hour, new paint, new rubber.”

“Absolutely essential for any kind of serious police work, huh?”

“You got that right!”

Back on the boat, Crockett finds Stone claiming to have been shot in the hand when he tried to sell his tape downtown. Crockett wants no part of it, but is drawn in when Joplin informs him that a federal warrant has been issued for Stone’s arrest in connection with the shooting death of his cameraman. The bogus feds that search the boat that night lend even more credibility to the story(Some guard Elvis is!). Crockett’s woken later by a phone call from Stone, at the airport, claiming he’s sold the tape. After the pickup, their tail is easily(thought not quickly) lost by the Testarossa, and Stone’s tossed behind bars for his own safety. Crockett delivers the tape to Stone’s contact, but returns to find Switek has been duped into transferring Stone into the hands of Captain Maynard! He calls Crockett demanding the tape, But the reporter won’t return it until Tubbs fast-talks her into making them a copy. Maynard detects the switch and won’t release Stone. That night, the reporter is found murdered in her office, all her tapes erased. A memo reveals that Maynard has a judge in his pocket, who reveals where Maynard is hiding. But ther time the cops arrive, he’s fled to the Glades, and they find him marching his mercenary troops into a transport plane. While Maynard’s listening to Stone being brutalized, Crockett and Tubbs get the drop on him, forcing him to drive them to Stone. Another gunman bursts in and shoots Stone, allowing Maynard to escape to the plane. Stone passes away before Maynard and his men leave the ground, and later, on the radio, Crockett hears their murders in Nicaragua credited to local guerillas. His only consolation is, Maynard never comes back.

In both this episode and “Back In The World”, the notorious Captain Maynard was played by former Watergate figure G. Gordon Liddy. Today, he is a talk-radio host and one of America’s most popular public speakers. Also, this was the second of four Vice episode directed by Don Johnson!
