The Musicians

Phil Collins (In The Air Tonight, I Don’t Care Anymore, Long Way To Go, Take Me Home)
Born and raised in Chiswick, England, Phil Collins first entered the public eye as a child actor in his native country. After being forced to leave a stage company of “Oliver!” because his voice changed, a 13-year old Phil can actually be seen as one of thousands of kids screaming at the Beatles in the concert scene of “A Hard Day’s Night”. Perhaps this is where Phil decided to go into music, joining the struggling art-rock band Genesis in 1970. But it wasn’t until singer Peter Gabriel left in 1975 that they discovered Phil was the singing-songwriting talent they needed all along, playing behind them on drums! Phil took over singing, releasing several modestly successful albums, until he revealed his talent for songwriting on his solo debut album ‘Face Value’ (1981), which features “In The Air Tonight”, heard in the Miami Vice pilot.

Phil continued playing with Genesis and on his own, releasing ‘Hello, I Must Be Going!’ (1982) which features “I Don’t Care Anymore” and ‘No Jacket Required’ (1985), featuring “Long Long Way To Go” and “Take Me Home”. This album won Phil his first Grammy as 1985’s Record Of The Year. Phil guest starred on Miami Vice in December of 1985, marking his American acting debut. In 1988 he made his first American movie “Buster”, playing the famous English train robber Buster Edwards. Back with Genesis, they released the multi-platinum ‘Invisible Touch’ album in 1987, which featured the song “Land Of Confusion”, heard in the 2-hour finale of Miami Vice (coincidence?). But Phil would only sing on one more Genesis studio album, ‘We Can’t Dance’ (1991). Meanwhile, his solo career went on with the release of ‘…But Seriously’ (1989), winning Phil his second Grammy for 1990’s Song Of The Year, “Another Day In Paradise”, then with ‘Both Sides’ (1993) and ‘Dance Into The Light’ (1996). After experimenting with a big band album, Phil released his latest album ‘Testify’, in 2002, to rave critical reviews. Unfortunately, he soon told the press that he was recovering from an ear affliction and would not be mounting a major tour.

In the late 90’s, Phil took a break from radio recording, entering the Walt Disney studio to write and perform 5 songs for Disney’s movie “Tarzan”. The film, along with composer Marc Mancina, won Phil his third Grammy for 1999’s Soundtrack Of The Year, and Phil won his first oscar for the #1 song, “You’ll Be In My Heart”. Its home video sequel also featured Phil’s music.
Today, Phil lives in Switzerland with his wife Orianna and two younger children, Lily and Nicholas, and his songs will be soundtracking another Disney animated film, “Brother Bear”, in November 2003. His elder son, Simon, is currently working on starting a music career.
