Based on James Michener's panoramic bestseller about the settling of the American West--as reflected in the history of a fictional town called Centennial, Colorado--the story begins in the late 18th century and ends with a typical 20th century conflict over land usage. Centennial, however, largely concentrates on various memorable frontiersmen, trappers, Indians, ranchers, cowboys, and farmers from long ago. Richard Chamberlain shines as the pioneer Alexander McKeag, Robert Conrad does some of his best work as French-Canadian Pasquinel, and performances by Alex Karras, Chad Everett, Sally Kellerman, Raymond Burr, Richard Crenna, David Janssen, and Dennis Weaver effectively add to a tapestry of adventure, tragedy, violence, and dubious Western progress. Produced at a time when TV networks were in the throes of acknowledging America's history of racial injustice, the program paints a starkly villainous portrait of opportunists exploiting and destroying Indians in the name of manifest destiny. While the project's great length might make one wary of diving in, Centennial is the sort of carefully paced drama that makes one care about the intertwined destinies of unique characters and how they illuminate America's past. --Tom Keogh Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - Michner's Classic in DVDJames Michner's classic shines in its new DVD format. I had purchased the series in VHS format a number of years ago and was delighted to see it now in DVD format. A truly great miniseries with an equally great cast of stars. Rating: - Fabulous Series!Although I've had this series in VHS tapes for years, I pre-ordered the DVD version as soon as it was available for ordering and could hardly wait to get it. The wait was totally worth it! The quality of the picture on the DVD version is awesome, especially when compared with the VHS tapes. The story takes place in a fictional location in Colorado and the scenery is magnificient. The acting is very well done; of course, anything with Robert Conrad, Richard Chamberlain and Vanessa ... If you were like me - and watched the original - you could not wait for it to be re-released. I placed my order almost a year before distribution date. This DVD series does not disappoint. One of the greatest epics ever produced. Tremendous cast of actors. There is a portion of one DVD which contains interviews with the main actors discussing the "making of". If you care about the ... Read More Rating: - Centennial - Possibly the Best Miniseries Ever MadeCentennial, a miniseries based on Michener's book of the same name, is a sweeping saga of the American West and is, IMO, quite possibly the best miniseries ever put on film. The all-star cast doesn't disappoint, from Richard Chamberlain to Andy Griffith, and from Barbara Carrera to Sally Kellerman. The story is uniquely American, the cinematography makes the landscape another character in the tale, and the cast is like a necklace of many shining pearls. I enjoyed the series in it's original TV ... Read More |
