Editorial Review:

Product Description:
An international cast of beauties brings cosmopolitan flavor to what could have been a typical melodrama. Adapted from the best-selling novel by Peruvian author Jaime Bayly LA MUJER DE MI HERMANO (English translation--MY BROTHER'S WIFE) is a soap-operatic tale complete with adulterous transgressions hysterical breakdowns devastating betrayals and a shocking finale. Stunning Uruguayan actress Barbara Mori is the focal point of this Byzantine affair entrancing viewers with her nuanced performance as Zoe. In the tradition of those Douglas Sirk heroines who made it a gorgeous act to suffer quietly Zoe is wildly unhappy and frustrated with her dying marriage to Ignacio (Peruvian soap star Christian Meier). Not content to remain isolated in her high-class Mexico city apartment--a stylishly cold fortress of minimalist design and shiny surfaces--Zoe seeks out Ignacio's estranged brother Gonzalo (Colombian hunk Manolo Cardona). A volatile artist Gonzalo is a man of sensations and extremes thus serving as the perfect antidote to Zoe's dull stale life. The two strike up the inevitable passionate affair but what follows is as unexpected as the set-up is standard. Zoe s transgression leads not only to her debilitating Catholic guilt but also to a revived relationship between the brothers whose new communication brings a startling revelation about the past.Peruvian director Ricardo de Montreuil leads this production with a sure hand eliciting performances more complex than in the typical soap opera. Though it can veer toward slightly over-the-top melodrama the film is too intelligently written and acted to be passed off as fluff and instead is a serious deep look into the eternal problems of love sexuality and betrayal.System Requirements:Running Time 93 Mins.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: DRAMA Rating: R UPC: 031398188148 Manufacturer No: 19349

Amazon.com:
Based on the novel by Jaime Bayly, La Mujer de Mi Hermano is as juicy and melodramatic as a television soap opera. Director Ricardo de Montreuil opens the film depicting the dull marriage between young, gorgeous Zoe (Barbara Mori) and wealthy entrepreneur, Ignacio (Christian Meier). Their modernist home and glamorous lifestyle appeals to the sensibility of their hip Mexico City friends, but their non-existent sex life forces Zoe to seek friendship in Ignacio's poor, artistic brother, Gonzalo (Manolo Cardona). As Gonzalo and Zoe grow closer, Ignacio, enraged by jealousy, tries in vain to cover up his latent homosexuality, which is the root of his marital problems. When Ignacio discovers that Zoe is pregnant as a result of her infidelity, they all call a truce: Ignacio agrees to father the child, Gonzalo agrees to stay away from Zoe, and Zoe agrees to allow Ignacio to sleep with men. Far from realistic, La Mujer de Mi Hermano's shallow characters' sexual escapades are the only interesting aspect of the film. The movie's sensationalistic glimpse into a wealthy Mexican family's business, at its best, harkens back to the inherent decadence of Dangerous Liasons or any other story about a love triangle between family members. With clean, crisp cinematography, this modern rendition of a strict taboo provides temporary entertainment but lacks sustenance.-- Trinie Dalton

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Excellent movie
This is one of the best Latin American movies I have seen. Yes, it is a bit too telenovela-like; but, it is good. Barbara Mori plays a woman in a miserable marriage. Her husband is emotionally distant, never really wants to have sex with her and is hiding a secret. She looks for a bit of love and fun in her husband's brother, who only wants to have fun and live the irresponsible, no-strings-attached lifestyle. Add to all of this all the cultural and morality issues present in Latin American society ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Wonderfully Written, Perfectly Directed, An Instant Classic!!!
This is a brilliant production about family dynamics and the intertwining connections between them. Written with almost "Shakespearian Complexity": the actors were expertly subtle in their roles so as to present this wonderful story to you like the separate courses of a grand feast. You are held in deep interest and concern for all the characters and their roles.

(The secret of good writing is to actually make you care about the characters written!)

You are left with a profound ... Read More

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - There are not words
If you want to see a movie that promises the forbidden fruits of sweetness then leaves you feeling like you ate a pile of dung crawling with maggots, this film is for you. The other reviews explain it all, I won't repeat them.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A Stylish, Visually Stunning, Memorable Film from Latin America
LA MUJER DE MI HERMANO seems to have polarized viewers between those who classify it as a television novela and those who see it as a stylish Latin American drama. Written by Peruvian author Jaime Bayly, adapted by María Eugenia Argomedo, and directed by Peruvian director Ricardo de Montreuil, the cast boasts actors from Peru (Christian Meier), Colombia (Manolo Cardona), Uruguay (Bárbara Mori), Venezuela (Gaby Espino), Chile (Beto Cuevas), and Mexico (Angélica Aragón, Bruno Bichir). It is a fine showcase ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A Scandalous Foreign Film
La Mujer De Mi Hermano [NTSC/REGION 1 & 4 DVD. IMPORT-LATIN AMERICA] certainly has "extreme" reviews, either by people that really love it or give it about as much value as refuse. The important thing to remember about this film, however, is that (1) it takes place in Santiago de Chile, (2) the characters that are portrayed are of Latin America with their beliefs and values system and (3) therefore can't be confused with an American belief or values system and should never be compared.

On that note, ... Read More
