Party on.Running Time: 290 min.System Requirements:Running Time 290 MinFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: COMEDY Rating: NR UPC: 053939271928 Amazon.com: A colorful cross between the graphic art of Daniel Clowes (Ghost World) and the TV work of Judd Apatow (Freaks and Geeks), Mission Hill centers around 24-year-old slacker Andy French (Wallace Langham, CSI). A wannabe-cartoonist, Andy works at Waterbed World with part-time girlfriend Gwen (Jane Wiedlin, the Go-Gos). In the pilot, his nerdy 17-year-old brother, Kevin (Scott Menville, The Wonder Years)--beer-swilling pooch, Stogie, in tow--moves in with Andy and spacey roommates Jim (Brian Posehn, Mr. Show) and Posey (Vicki Lewis, Newsradio) when the French parents relocate to Wyoming. Created by Bill Oakley and Josh Weinstein (The Simpsons), Mission Hill began life on the WB, but was unjustly axed after six episodes. As Andy notes in "Andy vs. the Real World," "I'm not MTV material. Hell, I'm barely WB material." The hand-drawn 'toon was a better fit for the Cartoon Network's Adult Swim animation block, which aired the remaining seven. (Five more were written, but not produced.) During its run, Andy and Kevin meander through their share of mishaps. They include Kevin accidentally burning down pal George's mini-mart in "Kevin's Problem," the brothers falling for George's sister in "Andy and Kevin Make a Friend," and Andy losing his job in "Unemployment Part One." Guest voices include David Clennon (thirtysomething) as Jim's boss ("Unemployment Part Two") and Jennifer Jason Leigh (Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle) as the strange object of Kevin's affection ("Kevin Finds Love"). Other voices include Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants) and Dave Thomas (SCTV), who voice a variety of characters. Cake performed the funky title theme ("Italian Leather Sofa"); although not all of the other alt-rock acts featured in the show made it to DVD. Fun fact: Kevin's gravel-voiced gay neighbor, Gus (Nick Jameson, Foghat), was based on tough guy Lawrence Tierney (Reservoir Dogs). --Kathleen C. Fennessy Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - Mission Hill ReviewI love mission hill, but i can see why the show got cancelled. The comedy in the show is either hit or miss. Also, unlike other stupid cartoon today, something funny doesn't happen every 15 seconds you have to wait for it. This is not a show for the "surburban kid who goes to church" Rating: - An Amazing Series, But There's One Glaring Error...Mission Hill has long been one of my favorite animated series, and I was extremely excited when I found out that it was being released on DVD. The writing is great, the animation is visually exciting, and the voice work is well done. It's a shame that this show's life was cut short, as I feel that it was just getting into it's stride towards the end of it's production. There's only one thing that has prevented me from giving this DVD set the five stars that it deserves. On the episode ... Read More Rating: - Love Mission Hill... Too smart for it's time.Mission Hill is the best animated series I have ever watched..better and more intelligent, witty. The show is based around Andy French and his roommates living in like a overly trendy neighborhood (think TriBeCa, Wicker Park) and also, his brainy brother Kevin. The show is just so funny, not like out right bada-bing jokes, but somewhat dry, intelligent funny.. that's why I love it. I even did a faux resume on Andy French for this college class (yes, a real professor, in a real college, made us write a ... Read More Rating: - A good'n An absolutely outstanding yet overlooked series from two of the better Simpsons writers. A must see for fans of the genre. Think Freaks and Geeks and Home Movies. Rating: - A Great ShowMission Hill is one of the best shows that I've ever seen! It is so smart and witty. It was definitely not appreciated while it was on the air. It manages to combine slapstick and dry wit in a way that surpasses any of the crazy antics of Homer Simpson or Peter Griffin. A must have! |
