Instructor Shiva Rea demonstrates each of the stretches and exercises for the first trimester, and two pregnant women show modifications for the second and third trimesters (they're even dressed in different colors for easy reference). This removes the self-doubt home-exercisers often have about the safety of certain moves--especially in that cumbersome final stage of pregnancy. Using gentle voice-over instruction, Rea and her assistants take viewers through a half hour of meditational stretches using blocks and chairs for support. She follows that up with 16 minutes of floor work: lunge pose, bridge pose, child's pose, plank pose--all with the necessary adjustments. She winds things up with a four-minute guided relaxation on her back--the traditional position--with the second-trimester woman on her side and the third on her side with one leg up on a chair. By including the different adaptations, Rea has made a program with the flexibility to carry an expectant mom through her entire pregnancy--and beyond, if she wishes. --Kimberly Heinrichs Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - ExcellentThis program is wonderful. I have been doing yoga for 5 years, and, although it does not challenge me in the usual ways (backbends, inversions, etc.) it definately opens up the hips and is preparing me for birth. I highly recommend it to all pregnant women. Rating: - Good stretching and flexible options for all nine monthsI have used other Shiva Rea CDs, so I expected this to be more challenging than it actually is. However, it does offer good stretching that feels good and complements my other excercise. I like the option of doing the full 50 minutes or choosing shorter pieces of that, and the demonstrations of the three women that represent each trimester make it very easy to follow appropriate modifications. I'm just entering my third trimester, and I think I will find it particularly valuable in my last few months. Rating: - Not for beginers! If you have never done yoga before try something else. I had never done yoga before and thought this would be a good place to start. I started a few weeks before I actually was pregnant and I could barely get through the first half. I had no idea yoga was so hard. By the third-trimester though I was really into it. It helped so much for my lower back pain. I've had lower back pain for a few years, then was in an accident in 2006, then another one when I was about 8 weeks pregnant. I really feel like this ... I got them both, and I would say both are pretty good. I would recommend C. Crawford's DVD for earlier times during pregnancy, or if you have previous yoga experience. There are a bit more challenging poses in that one such as the warrior pose. Towards the end of my pregnancy, I ended up using only the Shiva Rea's DVD, as she presents nice/light alternative ... As a long-time yoga lover, I am pleased to see that the video gives subtle but important safety instruction, along with emphasizing the usefulness of isometrics during yoga. In general, though, it is super relaxing. Three fifteen minute exercise segments plus a guided relaxation section at the end make for a perfect after-work yoga session. For the last couple of hours at work every day, I look forward to coming home, getting ... Read More |
