Web Host Reviews / Webmaster Talk / Search Engines / Search Engine Chaos

Posted:  07 Jun 2005 00:55
Are search engine results going to lead to nothing but chaotic results eventually? Take all the rumors and reports of all the anti-spam efforts of the engines. At least this is what is being reported who knows?
1. cross linking is bad
2. the same exact link with the same text on too many pages or sites is bad.
3.if the site you trade links with is considered spammy or links to a spammy site that's bad.
4. affiliate links are bad

So what are we left with. Well the only people whose sites will show up on the engines are people who do not promote their site at all and make their site only for the benefit of their fellow man and will not in anyway try to make a buck. Now how many people do you know that will spend their weekends spreading their knowledge without any hope of compensation whatsoever? Sure there are people out there who just downright lie about a product and say it's great its the most spectactular thing I've ever tried and they haven't even used it. There are people who attempt to trick search engines with meaningless webpages, and I'm all for getting rid of pages like that. But if a site is say all about car parts and they happen to use affiliate links. What's the biggie? They work hard and if they had information not on the official site all the better, or even categorize things in a more efficient way. Great! I say.

The others that will always show up are the big money making sites. The official sites. That's ok no problem there. I'm all for capitalism.

But for all the rules that our out there I'm sure that there are a lot of great sites. I mean really good sites that are just what your searching for, armed with all the info and facts your searching for that are not going to show up due to one penalty or the next. I mean who could possibly keep up with all the stuff.
Let's just say there's a penalty for advertising with the same text over a thousand sites, and you just did that last week. Why should your site completely disappear for advertising in something other than a search engine. Is it possible that certain search engines are making their algorithms just to keep people from advertising in other sites besides theirs? Is that plan? I'm not saying it is, but what if?
It's hard to tell what's happening out there to be honest. Everyone is saying something different.
But I'm willing to bet that things are going to come full circle. Eventually, when everybody who is going to try to make a buck on the web as tried and either succeeded or failed, there is going to be a reckoning. Because filters and algorithyms that filter out useful information as well as crap will over time only leave the crap or outdated material ,and the webmasters that are working hard every day to produce content that the search engines need will throw up their hands and say the heck with it. What's your opinion?
